Conferment Of GCFR On Abiola May Not Sway Electorate To Vote Buhari In 2019 by yeankhar49: 6:49pm On Jun 08, 2018
Majority of Nigerians may not consider President Mohammadu Buhari for re-election because of the highly commendable decision of the Federal Government to confer Nigeria’s highest national award, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger of the Federal Republic on the acclaimed winner of June 12, 1993 annulled presidential election, Bashorun M.K.O. Abiola.
In a poll conducted on Twitter by make it, 68% of the respondents to a question, “Will the conferment of GCFR on M.K.O. Abiola by @MBuhari help him to win 2019 presidential election”, said yes while 15% said no. The poll started at 10.47am on June 7 and ended 24 hours later. Seventeen percent of the respondents said maybe. A total number of 1,472 respondents voted.
There were also 98 retweets of the poll and 18 likes.
The Nigerian political landscape was animated on Wednesday when President Buhari announced the conferment of the country’s highest national award on Bashorun Abiola. While some saw it as a gimmick to appease the South West electorates ahead of the crucial presidential election, others hailed the gesture, stating that it was the best way to honour a man who paid the supreme sacrifice for the democracy Nigerians enjoy today.
Comments on the poll also varied.
Jude Akpan in his tweet said, “ June 12th 2015 passed June. 12th 2016 passed. June 12th 2017 passed. So few months to the 2019 election, he has suddenly remembered June 12th as democracy day. It’s cynical, to help him woo support from the south west but it won’t work.
But there was a supporter of Buhari in Adewunmi Ayedun who tweeted: “it was not done for re-election, so do not politicise issues”

Buhari electibility in 2019 will depends on the objectivity of his performance in the last 4years & not any act of currying political favour from any region except in the core north where he is seen as a demi-god.
