Solar panel power key point!


Solar panel Power is the solar panel’s theoretical power produced under ideal sunlight and temperature conditions, which is Standard Test Conditions (STC).

This Power is usually determined by the Manufacturer.
This Solar Panel power is ratted in watts (w).

The watts is calculated by multiplying volts (v) and Current I (A)

Watts (w) = V x A
Voltage V
Current I with unit as Amperes A

If a Solar panel has a V= 36v and I= 6.94A
W= 36 x 6.94 = 249.84 watts
approximately 250 watts.

The power rating of a solar panel is usually written on the name plate placed at the back of the panel.


Interpreting the Name Plate:

Voltage (Vmp) or Voltage at Maximum Power - This is the voltage generated when the module is connected to a load and is operating at its peak performance output under standard test conditions (STC).
Vmp = 17.5v (for the above name plate)

Current (Imp) or Current at Maximum Power - This is the current produced when the module is connected to a load and is operating at its peak performance output under standard test conditions (STC).
I = 5.80A (for the above name plate)

voltage (VOC): This is the voltage generated when the module is not connected to a load.

short circuit current (ISC): This is the current produced when the module is not connected to a load.

Modules short circuit current (ISC) and the open circuit voltage (VOC) are fundamental figures in the design of solar systems.

When we press a switch lights come on, appliances work and large industries manufacture products. Have we ever wondered how this is done? There are actually processes involved in getting electricity to our homes and offices. When there is black out its common to hear people in our country say things like “NEPA or PHCN has taken light”. Have we ever wondered how “PHCN takes the light” like we say in a lay man’s language. What we refer to as “light” in this context is electricity.


Electricity was first discovered during the 1820s and early 1830s by the British scientist, Michael Faraday. The process of getting electricity to consumer or to our homes, offices and industries is actually by Generation, Transmission and Distribution of Electricity. According to Wikipedia Electricity generation, which is the first process in the delivery of electricity to consumer is the process of generating electric power from other sources of primary energy. This primary energy can be water, gas, sun, steam, wind, fossil, waste etc. Electricity is most often generated at a power station by electromechanical generators, primarily driven by heat engines fueled by chemical combustion or nuclear fission but also by other means such as the kinetic energy of flowing water and wind.

In Nigeria, Electricity production over the last 40 years has varied from gas-fired, oil fired, hydroelectric power stations to coal-fired stations with hydroelectric power systems and gas fired systems taking precedence. Electricity is generated at between 11.5 – 16kV and stepped up by a step-up transformer to 330kV at the Power stations.

The next phase of getting power to the consumer is Transmission. Transmission begins with the transportation of voltage, 330kV along transmission lines (otherwise referred to as conductors) and is stepped down by a transformer to 132kV at the Transmission substation, this voltage is further transported along transmission lines to Injection substations and stepped down to 33kV. Distribution of electricity starts at this point. The voltage is stepped down by a distribution transformer to 11kV which in turn is stepped down to 0.415kV and further stepped down to 240V before it gets to our homes or offices.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN POWER INVERTER BATTERIES & AUTO BATTERIES!

What is the difference between Inverter and Automotive Batteries?
This is a common question and most of the mechanics, battery dealers and inverter dealers are unable to answer it satisfactorily. To answer the question – there is a sea of difference between the two, batteries made for cars and trucks and batteries made for inverters, UPS or such power backup solutions.

Automotive batteries, to understand the basic difference, you will need to understand the usage of the two types of batteries; Auto Batteries and Inverter Batteries. Auto Batteries the batteries used for cars, buses and trucks are batteries designed and build to provide a very large amount of current for a very short period of time, usually just for a few seconds to crank the engine. The sole purpose of the Auto Battery is to crank the vehicle’s engine, once the engine is running, the alternator in the vehicle takes care of all of the power needs of the vehicle and also quickly charges the battery back to its full potential.

Inverter Batteries, on the other hand, Inverter batteries are designed to provide a small amount of current consistently for longer durations of time. All the backup power solutions, Inverters and UPS, function by converting the DC current into AC current because all of our electric appliances run on AC power. The Inverter or UPS batteries provide the DC current over extended periods for these devices to convert into AC power. To achieve this, the Inverter or UPS batteries are discharged over a much longer time to much lower potential as compared to Auto batteries. That is why, UPS and Inverter batteries are also known as deep Cycle batteries.

To achieve the above, the design of the two types of batteries differ considerably. The automotive batteries consist of large number of thin plates. This provides a large surface area of plates to react with the electrolyte to produce higher amount of current quickly. The Inverter Batteries whereas consist of lower number of plates which are much thinker as compared to auto batteries. The electrolyte volume of the inverter batteries is also more to prolong the chemical reaction to produce current. This enables Inverter Batteries to provide a consistent amount of current for extended periods.

So next time you are out buying new batteries for your Inverter or UPS, make sure you buy the correct type. Incorrect type of battery may not provide the desired backup time. More so, use to automotive batteries for inverters will reduce the battery life considerably.

Depth of Discharge (DOD) is the fraction or percentage of the capacity which has been removed from the fully charged battery. The State of Charge (SOC) is the fraction or % of the capacity is still available in the battery. It is similar to considering whether a bucket (or drinking glass) is half empty or half full.
