Nigeria's World Cup squad have had their departure for South Africa delayed by a technical hitch on their flight.

The Super Eagles were supposed to leave their training camp in the south of England on Monday night.

But the squad are still at Stansted Airport, after their aircraft developed unspecified problems.

The Nigerian government has ordered a new aircraft to fly in from Paris to take the team to South Africa.

The BBC has spoken to several players in the party, who say they do not yet know when they will be travelling.

The Nigerian High Commission in South Africa had sent a delegation to the airport in South Africa to meet the team.

Heard the pilots said the plane could still fly but Lulu put his foot down and said he would not risk the life of the players.

Good one by Lulu!

It is very annoying the way things are done in Nigeria! This is nothing about superstition! NFF chartered a third class airline company to fly the players, with only one plane! (as per their website).

Eagles grounded by aircraft trouble

Posted: 2010-06-01 07:14

Nigeria's contingent failed to leave as scheduled for South Africa on Monday night after their chartered aircraft developed a technical fault just before takeoff.

The delegation, led by NFF President Sani Lulu Abdullahi Abdullahi was booked on a Luz Air chartered plane, but the pilot discovered a malfunction, just prior to takeoff.

"We were at the airport and all checked in when the pilot reported that he had noticed a red light on his controls," Media Officer Idah Peterside told KickOffNigeria.com.

"He said he was not sure what the exact problem was, and could not risk the lives of the squad and so he opted to ground the flight while the engineers tried to establish what the problem is."

The NFF were forced to make alternative hotel accommodation at the Radisson, close to the airport.

"The NFF are making alternative arrangements for us to fly on a different airline."

However, Idah explained that if Luz Air were to provide a different aircraft, the Nigeria contingent would fly.

When this world cup is over if we do not do well

The EFCC should probe the NFF, from the corruption allegation made by Glen Hoddle in the coach hiring process, to the Hotel crisis to this flight wahala.

It is all down to corruption and someone should be sent to prison so others can learn.

by LX-LGX » 06 Nov 2008, 01:48

edited on 14th Nov : title has been changed from 6th into 14th Nov

The European Commission will publish a new no-fly list on Thursday 06 Nov 2008.

The list will be available some time on Thursday through this link:
http://ec.europa.eu/transport/air-ban/

A few carriers who have been in BRU in the past are banned this time. Don't know yet however if they are totally banned, or just banned for some specific aircraft:

Added on 14th November by LX-LGX:
"on 5th November, VRT - Flemish television - announced that the following carriers will be banned:"

Onur Air
Hellenic Imperial Airways
Luzair
Bravo Airlines (yep, the Congo-related carrier)

Please wait with in-dept comments on the above bans till the list has been published.Last edited by LX-LGX on 14 Nov 2008, 19:45, edited 3 times in total. LX-LGX

Luzair? Is this the first time that a european airline is being banned?
I hope they will have time to solve whatever there problem is, and that they survive this, I always loved the L-1011 Tristar.

Not suprised anyway, i just did a quick search online, pls someone should pass on this information to the presidency in Nigeria, those frigging illiterates are toying with peoples lives!!!
