Liverpool were so confident their £53million signing of Lyon's Nabil Fekir was on the verge of going through they allowed him to choose his shirt number.

France international Fekir had even conducted interviews with the Anfield club's in-house media team before the move dramatically collapsed on Friday.

It is understood issues arose during the course of Fekir's medical that made Liverpool think twice and the five-year deal, worth more than £140,000-per-week fell through.
