Canada, Mexico and the USA will host the 2026 World Cup after being awarded the tournament by the FIFA committee in Moscow today.

The three countries presented a ‘United Bid’ that promised to take football to a combined 500million people in North America and were awarded 134 votes to Morocco’s 65.

Mexico hosted the 1986 World Cup, while the US was awarded the tournament in 1994 but Canada, who have appeared just once at the tournament, have never hosted.

The ‘United Bid’ had been favourites from the start but Morocco’s promise of a ‘European World Cup in Africa’ was appealing to the committee.
The United Bid was endorsed by David Beckham and there will be 16 host cities across North America with the US holding ten of the 16, while Mexico and Canada
will have three each.
Morocco have now failed with five bids to hold the World Cup and are unlikely now to have the financial means to put together another bid for the foreseeable future.
