Members of the Senate today expressed support for the proposed bill to enforce compulsory registration of mobile phones by subscribers in the country, just as the bill scaled through the second reading.

George Sekibo, sponsor of the bill explained that the proposed legislation was aimed at providing security conditions for subscription and compelling all mobile phone service providers to register all their subscribers across the country in order to check abuses and criminality perpetrated by anonymous phone line users.

Sekibo noted that the bill when passed into law would check the perpetuation of fraud and other criminal tendencies done via mobile phones adding that it was introduced in the Senate after a series of consultations among stakeholders.

It just means that every sim can will be traced back to the owner. I guess there will be an increase in sim cards and phones being stolen due to Identity theft.
