This is one question which has bothered me a lot. Sometimes I wonder if text based forms of social media, especially those which enjoy high traffic, are able to garner a full gigabyte daily.

I did a calculation online and realized one gigabyte is 8,000,000,000 characters -- this includes spaces in between text which also count as data. This means for me to create a thread which will consume a full gigabyte I have to type an eight billion long string of characters.

I'm sure moderators are in the best position to answer this question. So tell me, does nairaland consume up to a gigabyte a day? I am very sure Twitter surpasses the target daily, even in half a day.

It should be up to that amount

I assume so too. If the regulars here are 200 in number then it means each member has to type 40,000,000 characters each. Some people here are capable of typing 10 - 20,000 daily. Add to this number the trolls and spammers who copy and paste rubbish from other sites and it's obvious nairalanders can consume 50GB in 50 days or less.

No wonder the admin warns against the use of copy pastas here: people would easily eat through 3GB a day with 96% of the information being nonsensical write ups.

With the many error 503 messages I come across daily I am strongly convinced this forum surpasses the set amount. It was probably a reason for nairaland's 2012 data 'tsunami': dubious hosting companies running out of space who eventually resort to deleting information.
