5 Questions You Should NEVER ASK During A Job Interview by talk2ekpa(m): 2:58pm On Jun 18, 2018
Getting a job is a major challenge of most graduates in Nigeria today. This challenge is even amplified when graduates begins to hunt only for jobs of their dreams. The reality is, such jobs are not easy to come by; there are not those kind of jobs advertised on job boards and vacancy sites on weekly or even monthly basis.

And if you get lucky, and you are going for such job interviews or even any job interview, you know you should prepare to answer the interviewer's questions about your background, education and work experience. But above that, you should be ready to also ask the right questions when your interviewer turns the table over to you.

In such instances, while you should ask questions specific to the position applied, and generally related to the organization's work environments, here are 5 questions you should never ask your interviewer.

5 Questions You Should NEVER ASK During a Job Interview

1. What does your company do?
As a rule of thumb, you should never ask you interviewer what his company does. I mean, even though you sent out 'random job application, you still should not ask what the company does on the interview seat. Generally, you are expected to do your researches and home works very well before going for a job interview. Ensure that your home works should include detailed history of the company, which should include what the company does. As a candidate, ensure you are passionate enough about an organization before the day of your interview.

Instead of asking what you do, you can alternatively ask question like; 'What exciting project is your company currently working on'?

2. Why should I work for your company?
Really... Why should you work for my company? You don't know why you should work for my company, yet you applied? Most candidates are tempted to asking this particular question when S/he begins having the feelings of possessing better qualification and experience than the position/organization requires.

Well, nothing is wrong in displaying your confidence, but remember that one most important key to acing job interview is your humility. Your employer/interviewer might tag you 'too pompous' when you begin projecting much of your personal achievements during the interview.

Instead of asking why you should work for the company, you could alternatively ask 'what life is truly like at the company'.

3. How long will it take me to get promoted?
Surely, you'll be promoted, so don't get too curious about it to the point of your interview. Organizations have different mode of operations and uses different factors for promotion. For example, a sales and marketing oriented company's promotion might depend highly on the performance of each staff rather than staff's qualifications and experience.

Think of it; how can the HR officer know how long before you get promoted in a company such as above?. It is also worth nothing that the decision to promoting a staff might/does not lies with the HR department alone. So instead of asking how long before promotion comes, you could tactically ask something like 'How have you been able to progress your career here?"

4. What the benefits package is like?
It is one thing for your interviewer to ask how much you would want to be paid for your services to the organization, but it entirely another thing for you to be asking on the pay and benefits packages of the organization. This is the rule; as a job applicant, it's not a good idea to ask about salary, benefits, hours or flexibility during your interview.

Instead of asking your interviewer the above question, it recommended you wait until when the interviewer will ask of your pay/benefits expectations on the job, then, you can get as detailed as possible.

5. Asking Questions Relating to the Integrity of the Recruitment Process
This is especially common during government or general recruitment. When an organization is conducting recruitment for a fairly large number of applicants at once, the possibilities that some folks will raise rumors concerning the integrity of the recruitment process is highly possible. Now, don't join those rumor bandwagon, and take questions regarding such rumors to your interviewers on the day of your interview. This will not add to your chances of being considered for the position(s).

Questioning the integrity of the organization even before you get into the organization is a sign of disrespect for the beliefs and values of the organization.

Irrespective of what you've heard about the organization, you will not want to give the HR officers the belief that you are one of the many folks tarnishing the image of the organization to the outside world.

Conclusion
In either case, an important key to note before any job interview is the fact that the interview process is set up as a means through which the organization can get to know you, and not vice-visa. So when your interviewer gives you that opportunity to ask a question, use it wisely, and not as an opportunity to make up for the questions you've missed.
