As a writer, author, publisher, you should consider registration with the Nigeria copyright commission (NCC).
Why do you think you need a copyright? Copyright is the exclusive right to reproduce and to protect from unlawful production of certain type of creative work. By getting this copyright, your work will be automatically protected by copyright laws in Nigeria. The NCC, through the copyright notification scheme gives copyright owners the option to register their work and deposit a copy of the work in a database maintained by the NCC.
You can obtain copyright for your books, music, films in Nigeria through;
ONLINE REGISTRATION; This new system of obtaining copyright, allows for online registration of authors and their copyright works. The online platform for registration is called ‘the Nigeria e-copyright registration system’ you can check the website at www.eregistration.copyright.gov.ng . When you successfully log into the website, you proceed to create an account after which you register your work for a fee. Your work is however, protected by the NCC so you have no need to worry.
PHYSICAL SUBMISSION; You can also submit your application directly through an agent for registration to any office of the commission nationwide. One will need to submit to the commission, a completed registration form, along with copies of the work, and evidence of payment of the prescribed fee.
The rights which an author or copyright owner enjoy in a work include the right to be acknowledged in any use made of his work and also to prevent any derogatory use. The interesting part about this is that, the author of a work enjoys copyright throughout his lifetime and for 70years after his death.
