Police authorities in India have disclosed that rats mangled and tore into pieces currency notes worth more than $18,173 stored in an automated teller machine, ATM, of the State Bank of India in Tinsukia district, Hindustan Times reports.

The police said they received a complaint from officials of the local branch of the state-run lender on June 14, saying they found notes worth Rs 12,38,000 in pieces in one of the ATMs on the outskirts of Tinsukia town.

Tinsukia’s additional superintendent of police, Prakash Sonowal, said the bank in its complaint revealed that the teller machine was not functional for about 12 days.
