AgricPower Africa, a non-governmental organization, has disclosed that it is initiating plan with the Ministry of Agriculture to boost the country’s economy to US$10 billion over the next five years.

This disclosure was made Tuesday, June 19, during a meeting between AgricPower representative and the Deputy Agriculture Minister for Research, Cllr. Cyrenius Cephas, who said the project is important and a module that has not been introduced in Liberia.
Minister Cephas noted that Liberia’s agriculture problems are huge and complicated, making it difficult to be addressed by the Liberian government alone.
“Many of these problems are so complicated that a single individual or institution passionate about agriculture may not have enough money, time, contacts, skills and other resources to leverage the potentials in agriculture to create wealth,” he said.
To overcome these problems, Cllr. Cephas emphasized the need that efforts be concerted through cooperation of like-minded people and organizations join in forming investment platforms.
He believes that if such a huge investment is made in Liberia’s Agriculture sector, it will promote merchandise farming in Liberia and encourage more people to move in the hinterland areas.
He expressed hope that the AgricPower Africa will provide training for more Liberians in merchandize farming and also empower smallholder agriculture projects.
While AgricPower Africa is still selling its idea, the Deputy Agriculture Minister Cephas noted that social security, guarantee and proper management team need to be seriously addressed to enable Liberians benefit from the project.
The organization says it is assessing Liberia’s agriculture sector and wish to transform it to US$10 billion Gross Domestic Product within five years in helping with job opportunities for youth and women.
Ahead of the kickoff process in September, AgricPower Africa chairman Aroms Emmanuel Aigbehi, stated experts will come to Liberia to provide the training on how rice, cassava and other major commodities in Africa can be given serious priority.
According to AgricPower Africa, it will empower the skills, knowledge and contacts of participating partners to create a modern and sustainable agribusiness that will compete in the global marketplace.
This initiative according to the group, will help create jobs, alleviate poverty and create wealth in Liberia through agriculture in enhancing government pro-poor program.
Aigbehi noted that Liberia can overcome her food problem within three years by adding value in processing and packaging food produce.
“In West Africa, food import alone is over US$40 billion yearly, with Nigeria alone at over $22 billion. This number is rising exponentially,” Aigbehi averred.
“The result shows that many food items in West Africa including Liberia are priced the same as in the USA or any European countries. This makes the cost of basic food items inaccessible for the people. Hence, the economy cannot sustain itself. There is urgent need for food security, national development and further political stability in Liberia”
As part of the agriculture project to boost the nation’s economy, the NGO noted that it is looking forward to enable farmers produce and processed exportable spices and herbs like pepper, ginger, turmeric, nutmeg among others.
He said if the program is achieved in Liberia, it will help farmers and business people to become successful and accumulate huge wealth within five years.
Agric Power Africa Chairman further revealed plan of making Liberia become its Powerhouse for West Africa and becomes a net exporter of food in three years.
“The implementation of this plan will enable the government of Liberia to build further, attracting more investments and funding into Liberia. One thing leads to another. This is the time to make Liberia a frontrunner in development,” Aigbehi maintained.
Apart from Liberia, the group furthered that Ghana, La Côte d’Ivoire and Angola were also mapped but Liberia was selected due to huge agriculture challenges faced over the years.
Meanwhile, Aigbehi said his organization will work with the Central Bank of Liberia to form investment program that will drive private equity capital and to create the Liberia and Agric Power Cooperative Bank to facilitate loan for smallholder farmers.
