Cash-strapped NFF await government grant


Cash flow problems have hit the Nigeria Football Federation as the N900 million approved by the Nigerian government for them to prosecute the World Cup is yet to be released.

As of Thursday, one day after they arrived in South Africa, the NFF had yet to pay for their accommodations at the Protea Hotel Waterfront lodgings in Durban.

In addition, they have been asked to expect an invoice of around $700 000 from Arik Air as cost of airlifting the Super Eagles from London to South Africa.

Officials are also hoping that the money comes in on time for them to settle bonus payments to the players and Technical Adviser Lars Lagerback, all of whom are on graduated payments for the World Cup.

Lagerback is due to get $150 000 if the Super Eagles reach the Round of 16. That amount will climb to $200 000 if they reach the quarterfinal, $300 000 for the semi-final or third place finish.

If the team reach the Final, the Swede gets $400 000 and winning the Cup nets him $500 000.

Apart from the graduated bonuses promised to the players, they are also due to share in 25% of the pot from FIFA to the NFF, and the NFF is keen to sort that out before the World Cup kicks off.

I tire o! must this happen to us in every tournament? but if it is the fault of government that fail to release the money, shame on them all.
