Armed robbery: Banks shut premises in Aba http://www.punchontheweb.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art201006070474615 Members of the public are facing difficult times in transacting business in Aba, the commercial city of Abia State. This is as a result of the decision taken by the banks’ managements in the area to lock up their premises as a result of alleged incessant attacks by armed robbers. Armed robbers had last week raided Fidelity Bank and First Bank in the commercial city, carting away undisclosed amount of money, resulting in protest from banks. A fashion designer in Aba, Miss Joy Anosike, who spoke with our correspondent on the development, explained that traders were finding it difficult to withdraw money from the banks. She said that some of the traders in Aba had been travelling to Umuahia for their banking transactions. Speaking on the incident, the Abia State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ani Okechukwu, told our correspondent in a telephone interview on Sunday that police had taken measures to forestall a recurrence. “We want to also call on members of the public, including bankers to give vital information that can lead to the arrest of criminals within their surroundings,” Okechukwu, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, said. The police spokesman, however, hoped that the banks in Aba would resume duty on Monday (today), adding that the police would not spare any criminal within the metropolis. The Inspector-General of Police, Ogbonna Onovo, in his bid to reduce bank robberies, had among other things, advised banks to get security door, bullet proof bullion vans and meet regularly with police officers in their areas for security ideas. |
