According to a recent report from the World Poverty Clock, Nigeria has overtaken India to become the poverty capital of the world. The statistics show that out of 180 million people, about 87 million Nigerians are living in extreme poverty.

This, of course, means that the 87 million people making up that statistic cannot afford access to basic necessities which make life worth living.

What makes this report even more infuriating is the fact that India has over a billion people and that is saying a lot for Nigeria that has about six times less India’s population.

Nigeria currently faces a lot of challenges including economic downturn. Many analysts have said this is due to the fact that the government of the day has neither diversified the economy from over-concentration on the country’s Oil sector nor put policies in place to aid the ease of doing business in the country.

When asked, many middle-class Nigerians admitted to being responsible for the welfare of a large number of people including parents, children, siblings and distant relatives, who are not able to meet up with educational or upkeep demands.

This is one contributory factor to the growing poverty in Nigeria. If everyone who possesses the necessary qualities, is able to access gainful employment, the tide will inevitably turn in the favor of the people.

While Saraki the Senate President is leading a high powered delegation to shake Musa's hand and take glory for the win against Iceland.

All because of $12m group stage money from FIFA. Extreme poverty and deaths plagues the once brightest and darling of Africa!

History books after we are all long gone won't be kind on how we collectively self destruct.
