The Federal Government Wednesday dismissed the Brookings Report on Nigeria as the new global headquarters of poverty as it now has the highest number of poor persons in the world. Findings by the Brookings Institution, a nonprofit public policy organization based in Washington, DC, America, published a week ago indicated that Nigeria has overtaken India as the country with the largest number of extreme poor in early 2018 with six persons becoming poor every minute.

The report said,

“At the end of May 2018, our trajectories suggest that Nigeria had about 87 million people in extreme poverty compared with India’s 73 million. What is more, extreme poverty in Nigeria is growing by six people every minute, while poverty in India continues to fall”,

But responding fielding questions from State House correspondents after the weekly Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Council Chamber, Presidential Villa, Abuja, the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investments, Dr. Okechukwu Enelamah, argued that the indices used for the report may have been complied when Nigeria was in recession .

His words:

“I think first, we need to understand when we get these reports, there are reports that are lagging in indicators which means, people are reporting on history. There are reports that are leading indicators which means that they are forward looking and of course, there reports that capture generally what you do which is current. “They are actually dealing with what is current. So, when you get reports from Brooking institutes or all sorts of people, you need to look at the context. Somebody may have written a report when we were in recession.

Remember that if you are in a recession, what it means is that even though, your population is growing, people don’t stop procreating, your growth fact, which means that in theory depending on how they run those numbers, you will be going the other way. “There is absolutely no question that there an urgency to create employment in Nigeria. And it has to be a collective responsibility.

What I can tell you, with certainty based on ones background in business and economics, is that if we complete the things on infrastructure and you implement these reports we are doing, that is what I mean by a leading indicator, poverty will go down. “There is no magic to it. But you have to do it first, you have to put in the infrastructure, you have to implement the economic programme which is what will create the opportunities, they don’t drop from the sky.

So, I think we should roll up our sleeves as a people and do the work because, if we don’t do it, our people continue to bear children obviously, they would get poorer. “So, I don’t think we should kill ourselves that poverty is something just happen. I think it comes out of the urgent need we have as a country which is why we are focusing as a government to make sure that we create the enabling environment, the infrastructure and the things that are required to create opportunities for our people and I believe that will happen in the process of time.”

Ofcourse, why will they accept the report. The Minister who announced the rejection of the report and others in government have stolen "their own share" of wealth from the country. They have stolen enough for their grand children, so why would they care about the rest of us?

Sad to say but the reality is that "if you are poor in Nigeria you are on your own."

Instead of continue to remain docile and defeated, it is time for poor Nigerians to rise up and revolt. It was not this bad in Egypt and Libya but they revolted. So, the time is now for poor Nigerians to be angry, for it is that anger that will force change!

Praying and going to church and mosques for donkey years have not worked, and it will not work!

This man is opening his mouth, but nothing sensible is coming out!

In one breath he says indices used for the report were compiled when Nigeria was in recession, hence the findings are not a reflection of what's on ground today (28.06.18), and in another breath he states that poverty will go down only after the infrastructure in the pipeline are completed. See how he's giving out conflicting statements in one sitting just to try and cover the shame of this useless, visionless and directionless gov't!

Also, if he's stating that the indices used for the report are old since they were taken during recession, is he saying that now we're supposed to be out of recession that whatever benefits derived are now trickling down to the masses on the street? If the masses are yet to see the benefits of Nigeria coming out of recession -which is the common belief among economists- then how is the Brookings Institute report wrong?

This report is crap. Nigeria has a middle class of 40 million, the fastest growing middle class in Africa, and Africa's most entrepreneurial populace. A populace that without government support infrastructure built the 2nd biggest movie industry in the world. Home to richest black men and women in the world. With an informal economy that has made Nigeria the entertainment capital in the world...continents biggest music industry with its attendant trickle down economy resulting in a massive growth in the hospitality and service industry....this happens because unlike like most countries Nigerians do not wait for government wellfare...

Yet somehow Nigeria outstrips a country with a population of 1.3 Billion people in extreme poverty index..If this is not ridiculous then i dont know what it. These people are fighting tooth and nail to bring down Nigeria. Boko Haramj, economic sanctions, that led to an economic recession. Nigeria only just recently got out of this depression...first Human Rights watch...then the phony tale of ISIS in Nigeria...now IMF Report. No breathing space for Nigeria to catch her breath. We are being squeezed to the point of asphyxiation. There is an element of design in these problems that keeps popping up. What next? North Korea smuggling nuclear weapons to Nigeria?

The statement does not refute or debunk the report in any way going by what I read. It only lays out mitigating factors against the poverty level in the country.

"What I can tell you, with certainty based on ones background in business and economics, is that if we complete the things on infrastructure and you implement these reports we are doing, that is what I mean by a leading indicator, poverty will go down. “There is no magic to it.
