Where Are Our Wingers?? by teeroy(m): 3:26pm On Jan 03, 2006
These days i can not help but wonder what has happened to our wingers...both right and left. Although some people will tell u dat the days of wing football are gone for ever but there used to be a time when our wingers were among the best in the world.....finidi george who was referred to by archie mcpherson, a eurosport commentator as "probably the best crosser of the ball in europe".....emma amuneke.....tijani babangida....even in the youth teams,we had sambo choji.manga mohammed et al. they were all a rare breed!!!!!

@Teeroy

You belong to the old school, you are not a post westerhof football fan, You did remind me of Sambo (of 1993 U-17) and manga mohamed.

Wingers are not needed in todays football.

Watt?? i still think wingers are d best thing since sliced bread. can u imagine the kind of damage shaun wright-phillips would do to teams if given the opportunity to play in the wings. David Beckham was known because of his fantastic displays in 7 and not counting out Finidi George. For a team that uses target men, wingers are their best weapon.

Yes, George Finidi was the best crosser of the ball in Europe in 1995 & 1996.
In the olden days, Justice Adokie Amazimeka on the left and Segun Odegbami on the right but time has changed.
Football has gone dynamic now.

Sure, football is now dynamic. WIngers, to me, are not just footballer who crosses the ball but footballers who can in a moment cut from the wings and cause the damage. Amuneke was one, for sure. But lets have a look at Utaka, Osaze Peter, John Owoeri. We still have wingers around but the coach style determines an all out wingers or just a midfielder contributing to the attack.
