Worried that over a million Nigerians are blind and another three million are visually impaired, the federal government has tasked optometrists to brace up to the challenge of reducing avoidable blindness in the country.

Minister of Health, Isaac Adewole who stated this in Abuja during the opening of the 42nd Annual Conference and the 50th anniversary of the Nigerian Optometric Association (NOA) urged professionals to strengthen optometrics in the country to respond to the huge need.

Adewole, who was represented by a Director in the Ministry spoke on the theme of the conference: Optometrics: a call to globalization, stressed the need to emphasize the universal eye health which is a global action plan covering the period of 2014-2019.

He pointed out that major causes of blindness are either preventable or curable adding that the federal government has developed a National Eye Health Policy in 2014, to enhance universal eye health in line with the World Health Organization framework.

The National President, Nigerian Optometric Association (NOA) Damian Echendu in his remark pointed out that the conference was aimed at charting a new course of action for optometrist and eye care service in Nigeria.

He noted that the vision of the association was to create a world where no one is blind and those who are visionless can reach their potentials adding that they also aim at reducing blindness to the barest minimum and provide affordable eye care to members of the public

Noting that they were also celebrating 50 years, Echendu said the profession has scaled several hurdles and has been able to develop eye care services, which is noticeable in terms of public sector employment and private sector development.

na to task Optometrists? Where is the research centers that they provided for Optometrists? Which school in Nigeria can boast of being a standard institution for educating Optometrists?
they should task themselves. what really causes blindness, na Optometrists? stop the cause of blindness and there will be no need to task anybody. no equipment for Optometrists in government hospitals. no Optometrists has achieved any appraisal or award for excellence. but Genevieve and Aki and Pawpaw have. task the people you give awards to provide the services you seek.
all the politicians children way school abroad none of them fit go Havard cos they cannot buy their way in. they have no brains to make the score or criteria. why una children no day return come become Optometrists? go and task una children.
misplaced priorities
make una open standard hospitals like the one way una day go for london for Optometrists. the bad food and pollution and suffering na day cause the rise in blindness. many blind people have good genes in their families.

It's like most scientists in Nigeria are quacks!

No visible development, initiative or creativity

The same thing year in year out!

The only way we could eradicate any form of disease i.e polio, HIV... is through the help of the international community and nothing more undecided

Doctors, pharmacists e t.c are just there for title sakes or decoration!

Dora Akunyili tackled this to an extent when she was alive but it's like since her demise, the health sector is back to square one!

Continue to rest in peace Dora!

Well done minister. I wish there'll be a 50% pay rise for all health workers. Lack of motivation plays a pivotal role in poor health delivery that we currently face. Have a great conference to our Doctors of optometrist.

I blame the FG for this. We need as much as possible research centers, not for Optometrist alone but for all health sectors.

why won't there be high rate of blindness when optometrists refuse to do what they were trained for, rather, they want to do the work of opthamologists. Only in Nigeria you'll see optometrist carrying out surgery. Silly people, it shall not be well with JOHESU.

FG should task FG to give hope so as to reduce the rate at which Nigerian Citizens commit Suicide because its also avoidable.

Which school did he graduate from, and when did he graduate?

It is very unlikely that a graduate of Optometry with professional license will be hawking glasses.

He may be unlucky to get a good job that pays well, but he'll definitely get a job, especially in private practices.

Innumerable private practices lack doctors. He probably didn't search well, or just managed to graduate without knowing the knitty-gritty of the profession.

Probably.

Ignorance is the major causes. In this century some people stil reject professional advice/prescription.

As long as it is FG does/want to do this or that will hear always, Nigeria's inclusive growth will at best be at a snail's pace. But if it is news of state and especially local government's policies and achievements that's always in the news then we are on the way out of the quagmire we are in now.

Where have you seen an optometrist carry out eye surgery?

Most optometrist even stay away from pathological cases.

We should not just spread assumptions about a profession.
