If you suffer from claustrophobia and have a fear of the dark, then this kooky underground hotel in Africa might not be for you.

Travel blogger Drew Goldberg, 27, from Arizona, visited a rural part of Malawi, where he discovered the unusual inn.

In a video he explains that it took a man named Chifundu 11 years to dig the guesthouse out of the clay-like mud, and now he charges anywhere from 68 cents to $2 for people to stay.

Venturing into the hotel, Goldberg explains that a main staircase leading off the entrance 'just keeps going down and down'.

As there is no electricity, it makes filming a little difficult but Goldberg manages to shed some light on the interiors.

He explains that there are a total of ten rooms at the hotel.

The beds appear to be pretty simple, with mats placed on top of rectangular mounds of mud.

Goldberg points out that 'at least there are pillows' as he gives one of the beds a test.

'Not bad for $2 a night. I could sleep here easily,' he exclaims.

Venturing back to daylight, Goldberg discovers the kitchen in the backyard, with a stove fashioned out of bricks.

Apparently Chifundu started digging the hotel in 1974 and finished his project in 1985.

Goldberg says there is no electricity or internet in the area.

While it might not make for the most comfortable of stays, Goldberg concludes: 'Chifundu is an amazing person who is as happy as I’ve ever seen a human being.

'It's worth coming here just to meet him.'

Goldberg, who has been to more than 130 countries since 2012 making videos via his blog 'Drew Binsky' and Facebook, plans to hit Bhutan for his next adventure.
