AMIDST encomiums from staff and students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka for a successful one year in office, the Vice Chancellor Prof Boniface Egboka has promised to restructure the institution for effective functioning of the university. He also vowed to oppress any staff or student no matter the situation.

Addressing the University Community at an event to mark his one year in office, Prof Egboka informed that he has received terrible and warning text messages and evil threat messages but," I am not worried; I am rather strengthened. I believe we are handling issues well."

He appealed to the lecturers to work together with him in the interest of students as his management team makes sure they are fair, firm and follow the tenets of due process and fair hearing to the letter.

He appealed to staff to shun lateness to work , absenteeism , sorting , plagiarism , admission racketeering ,manipulation of  results before release , refusal to lecture at appropriate time  and financial impropriety to mention but a few. He appealed also that they should exist harmoniously and pursue their dream of becoming a world reckoned University hence good teaching and research must be sustained.

He announced a new administrative restructuring and re-strategizing of its activities in order to put the university in proper focus hence serious and unavoidable changes are being made in response to reports from internal panels set up by the VC or the University Management committee and response to queries to defaulters.

Egboka thanked the Governing Council Members led by Chief Senas Ukpannah OFR, the University Senate and management committee members for their unflinching support.

He thanked the university community staff and students particularly SUG led by Comrade Nelson Omenugha for their responsible behaviour and support through out the past one year. He announced the numerous linkages the school has established including that with National Water Resources Institute , Kaduna to establish a National Water Resources Capacity Building Network center for the South-East in the institution.

Others are Tradomedicine Research Implementation and Linkage between NAU and WHO Geneva ; MOU between Boras University Sweden and NAU Awka on generation of Biogas and energy for electricity from waste products through an integrated waste management process is being processed; Ministry of Science Seismic Monitoring Center to monitor earth movements ; and the Automobile Commission of Nigeria Abuja has approved to establish a center at Unizik to train modern mechanics for the South-East zone to repair modern vehicles using the latest mechatronics  inventions and equipment .

He said the gathering was for appreciating the successes recorded and shortcomings wit a view of planning for a better future. He said he pays the salary at 25th of every month noting that the university was among the first that paid the arrears of the new salary structure approved for universities.

Prof. Egboka announced that many Professors and readers as well as other lecturers have been promoted even as interviews will soon be conducted to fill some vacant positions. He expressed delight that the rate of legal cases against the institution has reduced by avoiding arbitrary dismissal of staff and termination of appointments.

He said the University has achieved much during the one year under review including completion of the Faculty of Law Building.

Others are drilling of a borehole in the University from N10 million by Prince Arthur Eze which was supplemented by IGR and another borehole contract awarded for movement of Faculty of Engineering to its Permanent site to create space for proposed faculty of Agriculture which is being refurbished; switching over to the Industrial power line along Oji River Onitsha Highway which grants the University more power supply thus reducing the expenses on diesel ; diverting away from the College of Health Sciences a High tension approved to pass through the institution .

Prof. Egboka informed that some ongoing projects like the stadium Phase one , hostels by ELMADA, Canada, Chike Okoli Center for Entrepreneurial studies, faculty of Education, Arts, Dr. Alex Ekwueme  Multidisciplinary Research, PTDF facilitated building and equipping of Department of Mechanical Engineering, Chisco Institute for Transportation studies; department of English building by GUO Okeke, department of Economics building by Ahaji Umar of Intercontinental Bank and the gigantic hostel building for male students which has been completed.
