Making a quotation for a shipping job is a function of the role to be played, that which is to be quoted for. What role does the importer want you to play as a Customs House Broker? Again what is the contract for the shipping, for instance are we talking about an Ex Works or a DAP kind of shipping terms? This article will present a sample quotation for a cargo handling job for an ex work arrangement, where the importer/consignee has allowed the Customs House Broker (The Clearance Agent as they are often called in Nigeria) to take full charge from the supply’s warehouse. This means that the Cargo Clearance Agent would have to arrange for a freight Forwarder (assuming a less-than-container-load), who in turn takes care of all export haulage, and export handlings and clearance, since the Agent lives in Nigeria and has no local presence at the origin of cargo or country of supply. In this example, the importer has said to the Agent; ‘hey’ look I am busy with other important matters, work with the supplier and get my goods delivered at my warehouse.
