The management of the Yaba College of Technology, Lagos has expelled nineteen students of the institution over various offences relating to examination malpractices.

The affected students belong to various departments within the school and cut across both full-time and part-time programmes.

In three different circulars published yesterday in the school, the students were said to have committed the offences during the second semester examinations in the 2016/2017 academic session.

All the circulars were signed by the Deputy Registrar, Academics, Mrs M.O. Osidipe and dated 27th June.

The circulars indicated that the Academic Board of the institution took the decision on behalf of the management at its meetings variously held on 28th May, 30th May, and 7th June respectively.

The students expelled

In one of the lists with Reference Number AD/ACAD/8/Vol. 5/06, the names of the listed students include Helen Kelechi Amogu, Damilola Esther Oduntan, Usen Ndifreke Bassey, and Korede Morufat Oladejo.

While Ms Amogu is a part-time National Diploma (ND) II student in the Department of Mass Communications, the other three belong to the Department of Business Administration. Both Ms Oduntan and Mr Bassey are ND I students while Ms Oladejo is an ND III student.

Another list with Reference Number AD/ACAD/8/Vol. 5/07 included eight names.

The expelled students listed there are Abidemi Ayejafor, Ibrahim Fashola, Balikis Adetutu Subair, Ridwan Ayinde Razak, Adetola Adeshina, Bright Christian Okere, David Agary and Abiodun Austine Sholaja.

Both Mr Ayejafor and Mr Fashola are full-time Higher National Diploma (HND) II students in the Department of Computer Science.

For Ms Subair and Mr Rasak, they belong to the Department of Science and Laboratory Technology as part-time ND II students.

The remaining four are also part-time students. While Mr Adeshina is in ND III Computer Science, Mr Okere is in ND III Statistics, Mr Agary is in ND II Electrical and Electronics Engineering but Mr Sholaja is an ND I student in IME.

One other circular with reference number AD/ACAD/8/Vol. 5/08 listed seven other names.

They are Oluwasesan Gabriel Oyewusi, Rachael Nwaigwe, Emmanuel Olajide Adegoke, Jamiu Morakinyo, Chuka Ewiwilem, Francis Ayorinde and Akeem Ayo Adeosun.

Mr Oyewusi and Ms Nwaigwe are both of the Department of Accounting as full-time students. While the latter is in ND II, the former is in ND I.

Mr Adegoke studies Business Administration as a part-time ND III student while Mr Morakinyo is a full-time ND I student in Surveying and Geoinfomatics.

Meanwhile, Mr Ewiwilem is an ND I full-time student in Building Technology. The other two, Mr Ayorinde and Mr Adeosun are ND III students in the Mechanical Engineering department.

All the affected students have been directed to hand over the school’s property in their possession to any of their heads of departments, the Polytechnic librarian, or Dean of Students’ Affairs “with immediate effect”.

Explaining the rationale behind the decision, YABATECH spokesman, Ndubueze Ejiofor said that it was standard practice that once one student was caught cheating in the exam, he/she would face the music as stated in the students’ handbook.

“When the students were admitted, they were given the students’ handbook. Part of the content discriminates against examination malpractices. It is standard practice here. Once anyone violates the rule, he should be ready to pay for that,” he told journalists.
