Union Official Punches Motorcyclist To Death Over N150 Ticket by Uranus1: 3:11am On Jul 05, 2018 |
An official of a commercial motorcyclists’ association in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Wednesday allegedly punched a motorcycle rider, Ibrahim Raji, to death. It was gathered that the official attacked Raji over his refusal to obtain the daily union ticket of N150. The incident was said to have occurred at the Iyana Mortuary area of the metropolis. The union official, identified simply as Saheed, reportedly flagged down the victim, who was a father of four, at Iyana Mortuary bus stop and demanded the day’s ticket which the rider could not produce. It was gathered that Raji told Saheed that he was not a commercial motorcyclist, popularly called okada rider, but a bricklayer going to work and did not need to obtain any ticket. Raji’s insistence not to pay N150 for the ticket was said to have infuriated Saheed, who dragged him down from his motorcycle and punched him on the forehead which made him fall into a gutter, where he died. Eyewitnesses alleged that the union official wore a locally-made charmed ring on one of his fingers, which turned his punch into a “killer punch.” It was gathered that Saheed and other union officials present at the scene made s efforts to save the victim by rushing him to the nearby Federal Medical Centre, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, but he was confirmed dead on arrival. The death of Raji led to a spontaneous protest by scores of commercial motorcyclists present at the scene, which spread to some major streets in the capital city. The protesters asked Governor Ibikunle Amosun to immediately withdraw union officials from roads. The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the incident. He said, “The suspect has been arrested; he is with us. The Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, has ordered that the case be transferred to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for investigation and possible prosecution of the suspect.” Oyeyemi warned members of the public against taking the laws into their own hands. https://www.nigerialog.com/crime/union-official-punches-motorcyclist-to-death-over-n150-ticket/new/#new |
