The current president of France, Emmanuel Macron was on a recent visit to Nigeria to address 2000 young African entrepreneurs from the Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF) on the potentials of the average young African.

During the visit, he attended a planned concert at the New Afrika Shrine in Lagos, dedicated to the late Afrobeat musician, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.

Of all the important things Macron said in his speech at the shrine, was one that stood out. He urged that Nigerians and indeed Africans ought to try their hardest to succeed in Africa and shift focus from emigrating to Europe.

The number of African migrants in Europe is alarming, something that Macron, as well as other experts, have identified as being caused by unplanned population growth.

In the case of Nigeria, this is quite common among Northerners (who birth children indiscriminately and leave them on the streets of Nigeria to cause a nuisance, either by being street beggars or urchins).

Other causal factors include a lack of direction and honesty in governance which invariably leads to weak human capital development as well as gross unemployment.

Using Nigeria as a case study, it is obvious that those in government are hardly interested in implementing policies that will positively affect the citizens who vote the officials into office but to score cheap political points.

A classic example is the fact that just before Macron's arrival at the New Afrika Shrine, the Lagos State government suddenly realized the road leading to the shrine was untarred and hurriedly gave the road a facelift!
