Wed, 11 Jul 2018

About three weeks after the killing of over 200 persons in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State by suspected Fulani herdsmen, Governor Simon Lalong on Tuesday said “the relevant bills to try the perpetrators will soon be signed into law.”

But a former Head of State and National Chairman of Nigeria Prays, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (retd.), said that “the people arrested should be investigated and prosecuted in Jos where the crime was committed” and not in Abuja the military suggested.

While promising to ensure the enthronement of sustainable peace on the Plateau, Lalong said that government had reviewed adequate laws to prosecute the offenders in Jos.

The Plateau State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Yakubu Dati, according to a WhatsApp message sent to journalists, quoted Lalong as saying this while receiving Gowon at the Government House, Jos.

Gang-up by parties can’t stop Buhari ‘ APC - VANGUARD
Wed, 11 Jul 2018

The All Progressives Congress, APC, has affirmed that no gang-up directed against the Muhammadu Buhari-led administration would work as it yesterday called on all those with grievances against the party to retrace their steps while the windows for reconciliation are still open. The party’s assertion, nonetheless, two of its members in the House of Representatives, yesterday, formally announced their defection to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP-led alliance of opposition political parties.

The defection of the two members came in the wake of apprehension in the House over the leadership direction of the House, with members taking varied positions on the development. However, that momentum was deflated yesterday as 2019 presidential aspirant, Prof. Kingsley Moghalu and Second Republic governor of old Kaduna State, Alhaji Balarabe Musa, rebuffed the agenda of the alliance. Civil society activists, including president of Transition Monitoring Group, TMG, Dr. Abiola Afolabi-Akiyode, and executive director of Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre: CISLAC, Mallam Auwal Ibrahim, however, expressed hope that the formation of the alliance could positively enhance the competitive space in the polity. Saraki, Dogara, Tambuwal, Ortom, Ahmed, Scores of Legislators Set to Move to PDP - THISDAY
Wed, 11 Jul 2018

Realignment of political forces to oust President Muhammadu Buhari from office has intensified with the imminent movement of Senate President Bukola Saraki; Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara; and Governors Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto State), Samuel Ortom (Benue State) and Abdulfatah Ahmed (Kwara State), to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), THISDAY learnt Tuesday.

The political bigwigs are dumping the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) with scores of federal and state legislators shortly before the July 27 scheduled recess of the National Assembly, THISDAY further learnt.

Six other APC governors, who consider it impolitic to move, according to multiple and reliable sources in the know of the realignment process, would remain in the ruling party and play the spoiler’s role as part of the strategic plan to push Buhari out of power next year.

Already, both Tambuwal and Ortom have dissolved their cabinets, barely a year to the end of their tenure, to offload APC elements in their government and bring in trusted hands that would assist them to execute their agenda.

Terminal illness: Lack of facilities takes toll on patients, families
Wed, 11 Jul 2018

Terminally ill patients and their families experience untold hardships in the country due to absence of requisite facilities, financial burden as well as ignorance on how to take care of the patients.
Daily Trust findings also revealed that in spite of the huge amounts of money required to care for terminally-ill persons, the patients and their families pay from their pockets as government does not pay or subsidise the healthcare services for them. The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) also does not cover most terminal illnesses.

Findings also revealed that aside the absence of special centers for treatment of terminally ill persons, many hospitals lack required equipment for the treatment of terminal illnesses such as radiotherapy and dialysis machines.
Some common terminal diseases include cancer, chronic lung problems, chronic kidney diseases, stroke, chronic heart diseases, congestive heart failure, and liver disease. Most terminal illnesses usually occur at the last or advanced stage of the disease.
