Essentially malaria attacks and destroys your red blood cells. RBCs are responsible for delivering oxygen to your tissues. As malaria progresses a number of things happen but lets keep this simple, you gradually become anemic and unable to get enough oxygen to your vital organs. Your damaged red blood cells release a number of substances into the intravascular space (Cytokines etc..) and your blood vessels become leaky, broken RBCs start sludging and clogging up small blood vessels…these substances can also spark off what is known as a DIC (Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation) and you can start to bleed uncontrollably…

The short answer as to how malaria kills you is it destroys your RBCs, the fact you don’t have enough RBCs and also the knock on effect of broken RBC and their contents being spilt into the IV space …clog up small blood vessels to kidneys, brain etc…The patient slips into a coma with severe brain swelling, kidneys stop working properly….you get acidotic and can’t get rid of all these toxins …you get multile organ failure…liver stops working properly….your blood cannot carry enough oxygen to the tissues, you get short of breath as you try get more oxygen into your blood and fluid leaks into the lungs through leaky blood vessels …and also your acid state pushes you to try compensate with blowing off extra CO2…Your platelets drop off, which can lead to some bleeding, and the DIC mentioned earlier can also lead to catastrophic bleeding which can be very tricky to manage …If untreated this cycle just gets worse and worse as more and more RBCs are destroyed by increasing numbers of parasites in the blood…Falciparum MALARIA IS A TIME CRITICAL ILLNESS …the longer you leave it the worse it gets …as these parasites reproduce so fast…
Malaria is 100% preventable and is usually also very treatable…however malaria kills hundreds of thousands of people each year, …it kills you by you not adopting all the prevention measures available and by allowing complacency to set in. The poor, frail and young are less empowered to adopt all the prevention measures and this is why it is so important this world continue to focus on large scale global prevention strategies than get too distracted with sensationalist subjects such as Zika, etc…Malaria kills one person every ten minutes in Tanzania …malaria kills by not paying enough attention to it. – Article Courtsey of www.wellaHealth.com
