The high cost of some available animal protein in Nigeria has compelled us to look for alternative source of protein from animals which are reared with minimum capital. Micro livestock such as snail naturally fill the vacuum as an important source of protein. Irrespective of snail considerable high potentials, local snails production has failed to meet the country's demand which is far higher than the current supply. It becomes obvious that a lot of work and campaign has to be put in place with the aim to increase snail availability which will in turn allow affordabilty for every household.

Moreover many who are already into snail farming are also unwilling to let others know about the farming methodology and the techniques are often shrouded in secrecy, this informed our decision to design a promotional and practical capacity building program that will motivate individuals mostly in the urban region to engage in commercialization of snail production in Nigeria.

Considering the high prospect in the sail industry, the provision of protein through snails availability and creating employment for the producers, processors and marketers, we are therefore advising and encouraging massive participation and diversification into snail farming.

BENEFITS OF GROWING SNAILS
– It has the potential for huge returns on investment with an extremely low level of inputs.
– It is a business that can be accommodated within a family’s backyard and not much stress required.
– No foreign made types of equipment are needed for its farming. – Feedstuffs are made of abundant and cheap feedstuffs and they consist of materials mostly not required by human beings.

PRECAUTIONS IN SNAIL FARMING

1. Do not stock very large snails; they might have passed their reproductive age.
2. Do not transport your snails on a sunny day to avoid exposing them to harsh weather this
often leads to stress which could lead to death or poor adaptation.
3. Do not use snails with wrinkled body, cracked and broken shell for breeding, they should be
fresh and active for better performance.
4. Do not stock snails gathered from the wild.
5. Do not rear adult snails and hatchlings together to avoid cannibalism.
6. Do not give salt or salty food to snails, as much as possible avoid soap, detergent, paint or
chemicals on snail feed.
