I used to join the ferry from flour mills apapa to cms when I was living on d mainland n working on the Island.
I really used to enjoy the ride cos it was organized, stress free, heat free and saved a lot of time as compared to road transportation.moreover the ferry staff would never allow the ferry move if anyone refused to wear the jackets.

Funny enough, I was discussing this with my wife just this morning.

There should be ferries that'll run Ikorodu-Ajah/Lekki-Ikoyi-CMS-Apapa consistently. Not all those small-small 10 passenger boat o. It'll save the road at least.

And Lagos's aka in Yoruba is "Eko aro'misa legbe-legbe" (the land of many waters).

With my experience, underlisted might be responsible.

1. The cost of transport - We pay between N700 and N1,500 from sandfield to Ikorodu. No price regulation by government.
2. Lack of government presence on waterways - Individuals are solely responsible for providing boats. FG and Lagos are still claim supremacy.
3. Frequent accidents on waterways. Some of the accidents are attributed to overloading and because most times nobody regulates, they transport excess passengers
4. The States of the boats. You can imagine that severally boats developed faults while in the deep sea. Sometimes passengers are trans-loaded to another boat which makes it very risky.

etc.

deepwater:
OP they actaully do use this means of transport.
Your post up there has the quayside of CMS-MARINA waterfront where banana boats and outboard engine reinforced fibre glass watercrafts are used to ferry personnel to the floor mill/apapa quayside. Also people take this boats everyday from same location to Ikorodu.

Problem is actually not lagosians but the government, if more and safer boats would be provided the routes can extend to OJO terminal from Mile 2 and as well Liverpool to Ajah. But the government no wan reason the matter. ordinary perdonal floatation devise (PFD) seacoach and cruise whatever can not buy and renew. Government should give this license to the south south people as they have the money and experience for watertransport. Just check out what they are doing in terms of marine logistics to service offshore operation. Oyibo self no believe say cabotage law go fit work reach this level.

True. But the FG gives both private and government institutions licenses to operate on that waters. That is why the LASG have their ferries and jetties. The state government should build more jetties and introduce more ferries.

But of course, developing that mode of transport will deprive them and their cronies in the NURTW from making billions of naira that they are used to.

I think its bcuz of the accident rates. take for example an accident happens on the road u can easily rush the person to the hospital buh wen a jetty capsizes it hard for u to even see a means of moving the injured ppl not to talk of them reaching the hospital on time
buh after seeing these challenges the govt can try to make everything in place like having an ambulance built jetty or ferry and even having light house stationed at close distances within themselves so as to ppl can feel safe travelling by water by just seeing there is life around them

You need bigger boats/ships so that people feel safe

People should be indoors like they are riding a bus

need to make it attractive

People should not have to inconvenience themselves to get on. Entry and exit should be seemless

People should be able to drive and park their cars to board the ferry

The Lagos state Government is ready to take delivery of seven new ferries to boost its quest for a successful integrated transport system and create a thriving economy on the waterways.

On one hand many Nigerians don't want the govt investing in Nigeria Air BUT
You want LASG to invest in water transport

The thing is, our administrators are not so creative even while competing, Fashola brought BRT he started out with blue, red it shows the model would work but it was not properly maintained so they needed someone who could, this gave way to "Primero" and its been working since then.
But Lagos has more of water than land so I felt Ambode would explore that am hoping that's why they filled Oworo.

If the amount invested to road transportation could be invested to waterways with proper maintenance and supervision not to forget having a marine wing for LASEMA, the weather monitoring team, then we are on the road to having a mega city. This is the case but they would rather compete with what their predecessors have brought to the table.
