Should Vuvuzela’s Be Banned From The 2010 World Cup Finals? by Purist(m): 3:14pm On Jun 16, 2010 |
Since the last Confederations cup in S/Africa, I've never for once liked the vuvuzela. Then, at the last U-17 tournament held here in Nigeria, that was even more annoying. Whatever happened to the good old trumpets and chants? The sound that thing produces is horrible, I can barely hear the commentary, and it just doesn't make the matches interesting to watch on TV (I can imagine how disgruntled spectators physically present at the stadium would feel). Thankfully, I'm not the only one who feels this way. Even some players are complaining. Below are some of the comments from different quarters (from goal.com) "It is impossible to communicate, it’s like being deaf." - Lionel Messi "It is difficult for anyone on the pitch to concentrate. Hardly anyone likes them, but the people who do like them are those who like to blow the instruments and make a racket." - Cristiano Ronaldo "We love both. We love the vuvuzelas, it's part of our culture and we are used to them, we should keep going with them. I understand that some people and some players have a problem with it but we've had no problems with the vuvuzelas or the balls." - South Africa coach Carlos Alberto Parreira "Who are they to question our culture? The vuvuzela is part of football in this country. We would not go to Britain or anywhere else and tell people how to act, it is very patronising. This World Cup is in Africa and people should embrace it for what it is." - Freddie Makke, reported inventor of the vuvuzela "I would prefer singing. It's always been a great generator of a wonderful atmosphere in stadiums and I would try to encourage them to sing. In the days of the struggle [against apartheid] we were singing, all through our history it's our ability to sing that inspired and drove the emotions." - Danny Jordaan, tournament chief organiser "We can't sleep at night because of the vuvuzelas. People start playing them from 6am. We can't hear one another out on the pitch because of them." - Patrice Evra "One vuvuzela just behind you will hit you with more than 125 decibels of sound - much louder than a road drill - which will really hurt your ears and, when added to hours of partying with loud music in pubs and clubs, can cause permanent hearing loss over time." - Audiology specialist Crystal Rolfe "I don’t see banning the music traditions of fans in their own country. Would you want to see a ban on the fan traditions in your country?" - Sepp Blatter "I know you hear them on TV because my kids have been on the phone asking for them, so I’ve got them in my bag already to take home. Anyone who has been at Anfield watching me knows I am louder than the vuvuzelas." - Jamie Carragher Nairalanders, what do you think? |

Asking for it to be banned is contemptuous and smacks of arrogance. You cannot tell a host how to behave at their own party. |

U cannot even hear the commentators on TV because of that stupid thing call Vuvuzela. They should ban it with immediate effect. I am sick of hearing the sound. |

No way! Not in this on going tournament. Maybe the next World Cup, besides how do they intend to stop they it. Announce it over the P.A or stop and search from the gates? Maybe they will have to finish the competition somewhere else, Vuvuzela away joo |

Re: Should Vuvuzela’s Be Banned From The 2010 World Cup Finals? by Oba234: 5:49pm On Jun 16, 2010 |
lol, people are making a deal over some plastic horn that cost less than $7. I don't personally like it and being in south africa, I have experience it being blown right in my ear. It's not that serious. I don't pay attention to commentators anyway except when they are shouting when a player is about to score. It's easy for me to drown out the sound if the game really capture my attention. You don't really hear it being in the stadium anyway except if you are close to a group of people blowing it in the same section. also, there is no way to ban it. just suck it up and mute ur TV. |

I can't help feeling that if vuvuzelas had originated from Europe and were blown at Premier league or Seria A matches for example then nobody would complain, |

The sound of that instrument is so unique especially from the Television. Whenever the sound is being heard, one detects a match is on. I personally like the sound right from the FIFA Confederation cup. The Sepp Blatter comment is a good one. He understand the game linked to cultural heritage. The players should enjoy it and stop complaining. It is World cup South Africa 2010! It isn't easy to host o jare! |

Re: Should Vuvuzela’s Be Banned From The 2010 World Cup Finals? by maedan(f): 6:34pm On Jun 16, 2010 |
How would they feel if every African brought their own noisy instruments to cause a racket at every match? I know we had our own noisy supporters with their drums and trumpets but they were never as concentrated as this. If the vuvuzela can't be banned, then at least they should tone down the ruckus abeg!! |
