**Tasks FG Must Stop Importation of Dairy Products

By Dipo Olowookere

President of Dangote Group, Mr Aliko Dangote, has appealed to federal government to introduce stop the importation of dairy product like milk just like with cement by coming up with what he called “draconian policy.”

The Africa’s richest man gave this suggestion in an interview with the Financial Times of London, where he was quoted as saying “Nigeria has always had a lack of visionary leadership.”

Mr Dangote, whose Dangote Cement controls over 65 percent share of the market in Nigeria, decried the fact that Nigeria still imports a lot of things that could be produced locally.

According to him, “What Nigeria needs is to produce locally what we can produce locally. Nigeria still imports vegetable oil, which makes no sense.

“Nigeria still imports 4.9 million tonnes of wheat, which does not make sense. Nigeria still imports 97 or 98 per cent of the milk that we consume.

“Government needs to bring out a draconian policy to stop people importing milk, just like they did with cement,” he was quoted to have said.

Speaking about his $12 billion oil refinery project expected to become operational in 2019, he said, “when we finish this project, for the first time in history Nigeria will be the largest exporter of petroleum products in Africa.”

When it is up and running, — the refinery will process 650,000 barrels of oil a day, a third of every drop Nigeria produces and approaching one per cent of planetary production.

That will make it the biggest oil refinery of its type in the world.

It will pump out all the plastic Nigeria’s 190 million population needs, as well as three million tonnes of fertiliser a year, more than all its farmers currently sprinkle on their fields.

The project requires sinking 120,000 piles, on average 25 metres in length. But, no port in Nigeria is big enough to take delivery of the massive equipment, which includes a distillation tower the height of a 30-storey building, and no road is strong enough to bear its weight.

Mr Dangote disclosed that he had to build both, including a jetty for which he has dredged the seabed for 65m cubic metres of sand.

There is not enough industrial gas in the whole country to weld everything together, so Dangote also revealed that he will build his own industrial gas plant. There aren’t enough trucks, so he’s producing those in a joint venture with a Chinese company, he added.

The plant will need 480 megawatts of power, about one-tenth of the total that electricity-starved Nigeria can muster, he further hinted.

Dangote is building his own power plant too.

For years, and absurdly, Nigeria has exported all its oil as crude and then reimported refined petroleum, such as petrol and benzene.

That has been a lucrative racket for the middlemen who scheme over import contracts and who concoct ways to scam a system distorted by subsidies.

“I am sure you know about this game,” Mr Dangote said. Because of its reputation for skulduggery, he said, he has shunned the oil trade.

“It is very simple to destroy a name,” he added, referring to a family business that stretches back to his great-grandfather on his mother’s side, Mr Alhassan Dantata, a prodigiously wealthy merchant who imported kola nuts from Ghana and exported groundnuts from Nigeria.

“But it’s very difficult to build it.”

Mr Dangote reiterated his desire to acquire London-based Arsenal Football Club, saying “I love Arsenal and I will definitely go for it.”

He reckoned that the football club is worth about $2 billion.

Speaking about his daily schedules, he said, “people call me in the middle of the night to tell me about their problems.”

According to him, Tony Blair, a former British prime minister and his friend had told him he needed to screen his calls. “Tony said he only makes three phone calls a day,” Mr Dangote said, adding that each day, scores of emails come rat-tat-tatting in. “You try to be polite and reply but they come back to you with a longer email, not minding that here is a very, very busy person,” he said.

He reckoned that he takes more than 100 calls a day.

“Look Aliko’,” he said Mr Blair had told him, “the world is not going to fall apart if you don’t answer your phone.’ “He, however, said his ambitions were changing as he is considering pulling back from the business, concentrating on strategy and letting others run things day-to-day.

“I’m trying to step back from some of the boards.”

Nigeria still imports 4.9 million tonnes of wheat, which does not make sense. Nigeria still imports 97 or 98 per cent of the milk that we consume......of what use is the cattle roaming our streets? Just for hard old meat?

However Dongote can build a refinery from foundation but Nigeria as a nation cannot perfectly refurbish existing refineries.
Candidly Nigeria lack visions and visionary leaders as Aliko said.

I agree with Dangote that Buhair has zero vision and he is the reason Nigeria has since lost the plot to be a beacon in Africa but I disagree with him on the importation of milk on the premise that he is once again wrong to assume that Nigeria has the capacity to on ground to produce milk .. Fulani cows are pathetic milk producers and at that produce really poor milk and cannot even produce enough to meet the milk requirements of one Nigerian state alone...Dangote made the same mistake when he assumed that Nigeria had enough tomatoes to stop the importation of tomato paste into the country and lesson he has since learnt to be false after his 70 million tomatoes plant couldn't get enough tomatoes to even work for a straight week and he shut it down

Inasmuch as I don't support bad governance, our problem as a nation is a collective work of bad citizens and not limited to leadership alone.

Even if Putin and Trump are allowed to rule Nigeria for three years, their performances in office won't still exceed that of Buhari

Let's be honest with ourselves, we lack something fundamental to development

Nigeria is the only country in the world that's still synonymous to underdevelopment

America wasn't built by visionary leaders alone but by visionary people like:

Steve Job and Steve Wozniak that saw that computer should be for everybody and pioneered the PC revolution

Bill Gate that handled the software components and operating environment of those PC

Larry Page that started Google in College

George Charles Devol that didn't go to college and invented the first programmable robot "the Unimate".

Wright Brothers that was credited as the inventor of modern day airplane

Henry Ford and So on

Many of these people were dropout while many of them started their company in garage

It wasn't easy for them as an American

They faced similar challenge as we does here

They lack funds, starting capital and government support

They are independent builder

They sacrificed their career at the expense of building their dream

They built their dream at the expense of building their country

They don't just care about working for clients alone and making ends meet, working in an office and earning decent income.

They use their skill to do creative, inventive and innovative things

They always put their country first

Even above their fate, faith, belief and religion

They always use their brain

They don't complain

They solve problems

Is it good roads that's still stopping Nigeria programmers and software engineers from creating the next programming language, compiler, IDE, CMS?

Let's keep deceiving ourselves

Africans only accompany the rest of the modern world to the world

We're only scouting with them

They did a great job by tolerating our stay

Buhari only assumed the reins of government about 3 years ago, so if you say that Nigeria had since lost its plot to become a beacon in Africa, how come you are blaming Buhari?

If Fulanis are pathetic milk producers, then what about your people? Is there a handicap that stops you people from rearing cows? I thought you people claim you are better than fulani people.

Nigeria can indeed meet its tomato demand, the problem is lack of adequate technology to grow, preserve, store and transport the tomato. Most of the tomatoes our farmers grow ends up perishing.
Tomato is highly perishable and seasonal. Now, I am told a basket of tomatoes is between 200 to 500 naira. When the season goes, you will not find any tomato in the market.

For your information Iam of the factual opinion that is Buhari not used his greed and indiscipline to needlessly oust the govt of Shagari by today Nigeria would have been the beacon of Africa... That coup was the point we lost the plot and Nigeria became the hopeless rot it has become.

Who are my people? You don't even know me yet you have already assigned me a tribe and religion in your bigot filled mind .. You can't change the fact that Fulani cows produce like quality beef and milk that would even be allowed in any store in Europe because of the really poor quality.

This is how Dangote Assumed that the problem was preservation and he set up a 70 million dollar mega plant big enough to produce preservable puree to meet the whole of west Africas need till he released we weren't even producing enough tomatoes in the first place and shut down the plant .

Your obsession with Buhari no go kill you.
The WEREYS who has been mismanaging this country since Independence, had no share in the leadership's lack of vision?, na Buhari who came in 3 years ago to start putting the shattered NONSENSE that we called economy together be the culprit.

Dangote is a product and f the vision-less leaders

He has never done well in any business he has non-political advantages of his competitions

Petroleum refining is not a profitable venture any where in the world.. So I feel his main target is the petrochemical industries (let's hope he has not learned loan scam from jumo Ibrahim cause he can easily steal $20bn with that project and we all would pay for it)

Eleme petrochemical is owned by Japanese now so that's a big competition for him.

I was an avid supporter of Buhari, and I accept he has messed up in a lot of areas, but that does not mean all nigeria's woes started and ends with him.

You must have a personal vendetta against Buhari, else you would not propagate outright lies against him and use that lie as a platform for hatred. It is a historical fact that Buhari was never part of the 1983 coup. That coup was planned and executed by Babangida, Bako, Abacha, and a few others, Buhari was invited from Jos to head the government being the most senior officer at that time.

Now, if you spew so much venom against Buhari for your perceived coup, why not spew the same venom for Ironsi for the January 1966 coup and for destroying our regional system?

Who are my people? You don't even know me yet you have already assigned me a tribe and religion in your bigot filled mind .. You can't change the fact that Fulani cows produce like quality beef and milk that would even be allowed in any store in Europe because of the really poor quality.

Where in my write up did I assign you a tribe and religion? Maybe your hatred for fulani and Buhari is playing tricks on your mind.

Believe me the problem is not that Nigeria is not producing enough tomatoes, the problem is that of transportation and preservation. Kano, Benue, plateau, kaduna and many middle belt states produces millions of tons of tomatoes. The main problem is transporting these tomatoes to the factory from hundreds if not thousands of miles through our dilapidated transport infrastructure. Even getting the tomatoes from the farms to the markets in the villages is a challenge.
