As we grow older, our bodies begin to show the years of trauma that we have put them through. Our skin specifically, is prone to aging but thankfully, there are quite a few things that you have control over regarding the health of your skin.

Although you can’t change what you’ve done to your skin in the past, you can always start practicing healthy skin care routines today and in this article, you are going to learn 5 important do’s and don’ts that can slow or reverse the signs of aging to have you looking and feeling younger, for longer.

Do:
Drink a lot of water

Water is necessary for proper hydration. Without hydration, your skin can become cracked and dry. If you want your skin to glow and be clearer than ever, then you may need to up your water intake. As a general rule, every day you should be consuming at least 8 cups of water.

Use retinol creams

Retinol creams are a great way to reduce and potentially reverse the signs of aging. Retinol is essentially a Vitamin A derivative that works wonders on the skin increasing cell turnover, boosting collagen production and a host of other processes. Furthermore, retinol creams are very affordable and actually quite versatile, having many applications beyond anti-aging.

Consume lots of antioxidants

A diet that is rich in antioxidants is good for the skin because antioxidants help to fight free radicals in the body. A large concentration of free radicals in the body can increase signs of aging, and worse, lead to a long list of diseases and illnesses.

Foods containing Omega-3 fatty acids such as fish and nuts are also helpful for reducing the signs of aging.

Wear sunscreen

The sun has the power to do great damage to our skin if we are exposed for too long. In fact, one of the ways it does damage to the skin is by helping to create free radicals so always be sure to put sunscreen on when you go out in the sun, as it can prevent skin cancer and other serious complications.

Eat healthy

A healthy diet is a very important element in preventing the aging of your skin. Just as junk food does damage to your internal organs, your skin can be at great risk for complications if you don’t have a nutritious diet.

Don’t:
Forget to moisturize

Putting moisturizer on your skin is very important to ensure proper hydration. Regardless of the amount of water that you drink, harsh weather can dry out your skin. Always moisturize after showering or bathing.

Stress a lot

Numerous studies have shown that high stress levels are linked to skin and cellular aging. Learning to deal with stress is one of the more underrated pathways to sustainable beauty.

Stress management is sometimes easier said than done but a good place to start is identifying your stressors, and then removing them from your life. If they can’t be removed, try to employ some anti stress measures to counter the impact of the necessary stressors. Some anti stress measures include regular exercise and increased consumption of omega 3 fatty acids.

Overdo your skincare routine

The secret to healthy skin is not some intense skin care routine with twelve different products. Keep it simple and stick to one or two products. Also, don’t over-wash your skin as it can dry it out.

Pick at pimples

Poking at blemishes not only makes them irritated and redder, it also makes them spread. On top of that, picking at your face or skin can cause permanent scars.

Resist talking to a dermatologist

Dermatologists are here for a reason. If you are having problems regarding your skin or simply want some expert advice, consider visiting a dermatologist. They can also help to identify little things you may be doing in your daily routine that are speeding up your skin’s aging.
