Sapele—ONE person is lying in critical condition at the Sapele General Hospital, following the machete cuts he sustained, yesterday, when seven herdsmen, brandishing cutlasses, invaded the family compound and farm of late educationist, Benedict Onokpasa, beside Holy Trinity Anglican Grammar School, Amuovo, Okpe Local Government Area of Delta State.

Elder brother of the victim, Mr. Jesutega Onokpasa, said the victim, Abraham Onokpasa, suffered several machete cuts on his head and body when he attempted to stop the herdsmen from entering their family farm.

“It took security officials at the Amuovo Police Station, located along Sapele-Warri Expressway, over an hour to restrain the herdsmen and restore order,” he further said.

The victim, he said, is the last child of the late Onokpasa, saying “he could not defend himself as the assailants were wielding all kinds of dangerous weapons.”

While calling on the Police to unravel the misery behind the attack, he claimed the attack had political undertone.

“It was carefully planned against my family because I am staunch member of a prominent political party in the area,” he added.

He described the attack as “another depressing indictment on the utter shamefulness of a prominent political figure in the country,” vowing to leave no stone unturned in bringing the attackers to book.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Andrew Aniamaka, could not be reached but a senior police officer at the Amuovo Police Station said some of the herdsmen had been arrested, while others were at large, and that the Police were after them.
