Really ? was his 34 years in service also planned? the fact that he was the most senior officer and an Assistant DG. — Was that also planned to pacify the Southerners?

The thinking that some parts of the country have their indigenes marginalized in positions in governance is understandable. But when naturally occurring situations ( a deserving officer who happens to be from a marginalized part of the country is given an appointment) it should be seen as a step towards normalcy and should not trigger unnecessary sentiments.

Would we have preferred that this deserving officer be bypassed and the appointment given to another "So that the favour of Southerners be not influenced". please consider.

Sir where were you when muhammadu trashed the "federal character", bypassed other tribes & put only northern muslims in charge of virtually all the security institutions - army, navy, airforce, police, civil defence, immigration, customs, dss etc?
When there were qualified superior high ranking officers from other tribes in those institutions...
People complained, and the reply they got was - "buhari is appointing people he can trust..."

Now imagine what would have happened if Jonathan had appointed only southerners to head all the security forces, or Obasanjo put only his tribesmen in charge of the whole security system...
Buhari exposed himself when he put only northern muslims in charge of all the security agencies, when the federal character clearly rejects such. Also when there were qualified officers from other tribes...
Now elections are close he has realised that daura is bad & the bayelsa man is qualified to replace him...

The new appointment is a welcome development, but we can NEVER be fooled by buhari/apc!

Okay. However, I must point out that though most senior officers are northerners, not "ALL" force chiefs are northerners.
Both the current Naval chief (CNS) Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe and the chief of defence staff ( the highest ranking officer of the Nigerian Armed Forces ) Abayomi Gabriel Olonisakin are Southerners.

You are largerly right though, but when we make sweeping generalizations like [ there being more/other senior officers from the south in the armed forces for all chief roles— something neither you nor I would likely have the actual statistics] and ALL army chiefs are Northerners— when that's not the case, we allow sentiments get in the way of our otherwise worthy cause.
