"It is not the Orange Revolution that took place in Ukraine in 2004 and 2005. Neither is it the Red Shirt Brigade protests that lasted for about three months in Thailand this year. But across Nigeria, in coffee bars, beer parlours, gatherings under trees, school playgrounds and even libraries, Nigerians are beginning a silent revolution against their representatives at the National Assembly.

The groundswell of discussion among them is centering on the huge cost of running a democracy that is adding no real value to their lives, yet enriching the assemblymen beyond imaginable and acceptable proportion. They are beginning to make sense of the colossal amount of money that is being expended on the upper and lower chambers of the National Assembly, where senators and members of the House of Representatives reportedly take home up to N351 million and N147 million per person respectively. Overall, the National Assembly is projected to cost a whooping N138 billion, according to the 2010 budget.

But with the budget already passed and signed into law, senators and House members began fresh moves to push quarterly allowances to N100 million and N45 million per person respectively. BusinessDay now understands that the assemblymen and women have settled for N60 million and N45 million per senator and House member respectively. It is this that is particularly seen as unwholesome and as sign of the disconnection with the larger Nigerian public. And protesting Nigerians are irked because tens of millions of them have to daily do the grind to make ends meet.

One e-mail circulating among Nigerians on the internet and seen by BusinessDay made the following poignant case against the pay and allowance regime the assemblymen and women are appropriating for themselves: “Salary and allowances of the U.S. President is (sic) $250,000 per year; US GDP is about $13 trillion per year. Nigeria’s GDP is about $175 billion per year.

“They want to approve more for themselves. Whilst doctors, teachers and civil servants can’t boast of N1 million a year, these guys want N30 million every month. Say no to this open looting of Nigeria. We can’t allow this to continue otherwise we don’t have any rights to complain.” "
