Samsung Galaxy Note 9 new features and upgrades

1. A big battery

Ever since Samsung had a mishap with the Galaxy Note 7 and its battery being a tiny bomb on an unpredictable timer, the company has taken it very, very slow with its efforts to expand capacity. Now, it seems Sammy is confident enough to finally give us the battery size that we deserve!

The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 has a 4,000 mAh cell, which is 21% more capacity than the 3,300 mAh one in the Note 8!

2. Even more storage

A power user needs their storage and Samsung will not disappoint. While the Note 8 came with a standard 64 GB internal memory, the Note 9 doubles that to 128 GB. There's even a more expensive variant with 512 GB of storage. And if that is not enough, the microSD slot of the device can take a card of up to 512 GB more.

3. The memory bump

While the "standard" Note 9 will come with 6 GB of RAM, just as before, the more expensive variant will bump that up to 8 GB. There are many PCs and laptops out there that still don't have that much memory on board.

4. The new camera
With the Note 9, we still get a dual camera module — a standard, wide-angle camera and one with a telephoto lens, providing optical zoom and portrait mode shots. The latter remains untouched, at least in terms of specs, but the "main" camera will get the Variable Aperture feature.

This means it has a mechanical aperture, which will switch between sizes of F1.5 and F2.4, depending on light conditions. Alternatively, you can fiddle with it yourself in the camera's Pro Mode.

5. Take it slow

The new super slow-motion mode also makes an appearance here. This means you will be able epic clips at 960 FPS, slowing reality down 16 times.

6. Stereo speakers
The Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ proudly flaunt "tuned by AKG" stereo speakers — utilizing the earpiece's driver, the handsets boom with a nice, loud, meaty sound. The Galaxy Note 9 will be getting the same upgrade!

7. Blood pressure sensor

The Galaxy S9 has it, now the Galaxy Note 9 has it — not only will Samsung's top-tier phones be able to measure your pulse and blood oxygen levels, they can now also measure pressure. The last time we tested it, it wasn't super-accurate, but did a great job at staying in the ballpark of what the actual numbers are. In other words — it's not an exact medical tool, at least not yet, but can give you rough estimates.

8. A slightly bigger display

The Note 8 has a 6.3-inch display, while the Note 9 is listed to sport a bigger, 6.4-inch screen. All the while, there are very, very small differences in body size — the Note 9 is 0.6 mm shorter, 1.6 mm wider, and 0.2 mm thicker.

9. A new S Pen

The S Pen has always been a major feature of the Note series and is easily among the best styluses for mobile devices to date. Thus far, it has had extreme precision and palm rejection without the need for a battery or Bluetooth connection.

However, with the Note 9, Samsung decided that the S Pen needs an upgrade — a slew of new features, which also require the stylus to be paired to the phone via Bluetooth LE, and have its own little battery.
These features are media playback control and remote shutter for the camera. But hey, Samsung will release an SDK for 3rd party developers to incorporate this feature in their apps as they please.

10. DeX mode without the DeX dock

Samsung's proprietary Desktop Experience feature has thus far required you to buy and carry an external DeX dock for your phone. Well, no more! The Note 9 can power the full desktop UI on its own — all you need is a Micro HDMI cable and a Bluetooth keyboard. Mouse is optional, as the Note can be used as a touchpad.

You can still use the DeX Pad, however, if you want your phone to be connected to power and get some cooling from the fan.

11. Dial it up to 11, keep it cool

Last, but certainly not least — the Galaxy Note 9 comes with the latest and greatest Qualcomm Snapdragon 845! Of course, this one goes without saying — you can't have a top-tier device without the cutting edge hardware to go with it. However, the Note 9 does have a new cooling solution — the so-called "water carbon cooling system" will keep the chipset running cool and, in turn, allow it to aim for optimum performance for longer periods of time.
