ONITILO DEBORAH EMERGE OVERALL WINNER OF MIKE OKONKWO NATIONAL ESSAY COMPETITION
Miss Onitilo Deborah of New Chrisfield College, Ikorodu, Lagos State has won the 2018 Mike Okonkwo National Essay Competition for secondary school students in Nigeria.

She emerged the overall best having scored 63% and 52% in the first and second round of the competition respectively.

Miss Ashley Davidson of Vivian Flower Memorial College for Girls who scored 62% and 49% in the first and second rounds, emerges as the second.

Master Ferdinand Esigbone Omagbemi, a student to Roshallom International Secondary School, Lagos came third after scoring 60% and 47% in the first and second round respectively, while the other winner is Miss Fagbemi Semilore Ireoluwa of Roshallom International School, Lagos.

COVENTRY UNIVERSITY TO OPEN CAMPUS IN POLAND
Coventry University is to open a campus in Wrocław, Poland, its first international campus, with courses due to begin in September 2019.

The university said it seeks to meet demand for flexible learning – whereby students can study whilst working part-time, helping them to fund their studies.

“There’s a real appetite for the kind of education that we’re able to offer through our flexible learning model, whereby students can study while they work and upskill themselves without necessarily having to commit to a full-time degree,” Coventry University vice-chancellor John Latham said.

NASARAWA STATE POLYTECHNIC PROTEST NON-ACCREDITATION OF COURSES, EXTORTION
Students of Nasarawa State Polytechnic, Lafia, on Wednesday took to the streets to protest the non-accreditation of courses offered in the institution.

The students, who blocked a section of the Akwanga-Lafia highway, also accused the school management of “massive extortion”.

According to reports, students carried placards with various inscriptions some of which read “accredit our courses, we are tired of stories,” and “our certificates are not recognised,” among others.

LAUTECH BEGINS TWO WEEKS WARNING STRIKE OVER POOR FUNDING
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) has commenced a two-week warning strike over poor funding off the university by the owner states.

This was contained in a statement jointly signed by the union chairman and secretary, Biodun Olaniran and Toyin Abegunrin.

According to the statement, the strike was given more opportunity to the owner states to prevent the total shutdown of the institution.

TEN FEARED DEAD IN EDO BANK ROBBERY
No fewer than 10 persons were killed following a robbery attack at two banks in Igarra, Akoko Edo Local Government Area of Edo, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

The incident occurred at about 5 p.m. when the robbers invaded the community in an attempt to rob the two commercial banks in the town killing 10 persons including security officers attached to the banks.

A resident of the community, Mr Ofei Obende, said the robbers attacked the police station in the town before attacking the banks killing four security men at the bank premises.
