When a plot of land is continuously cultivated without fertilizer application with time such a plot land becomes infertile and unproductive. To keep such a plot of land fertile, the land is either left for a period of time uncultivated to grow fallow and replenish its nutrient status naturally or supplied with fertilizer to make it fertile for agriculture.
In the education sector, the holiday period is the fallow period for the students, a period they are expected to be reinvigorated and rejuvenated for the next term or semester; a period they are expected to go on vacation to different parts of the world; a period they are expected to do some independent thinking and unaided studying. With the proliferation of summer lessons everywhere, I don't know if students still enjoy all these benefits that summer holiday affords.
