Maurizio Pochetino's team entered the new season on the back of an uneventful summer transfer window having brought in no new players and doing well to resist any pressure of selling their own players.
Both teams started brightly but it was Tottenham who got the opener in the 8th minute after a near post header from Jan Vertongen was pushed out of the net by the Newcastle goalie. But goal line technology ensured that there was no protest from the Newcastle players and the referee had an easy decision to make.
Newcastle were rewarded for their positive play in the 11th minute when Joselu headed home the equaliser from a fine Matt Ritchie delivery - the cross was as beautiful as the finish, and there was nothing Lloris could do about it.
Pochetino's men played with such purpose and insisiveness, you would understand why they didn't see much need to add to their squad in the summer - they soon restored their lead in the 35th minute when Dele Alli rose to a fine cross from Serge Aurier to head home to the far post from close range.
Both teams pressed on after the interval with Newcastle newboy Solomon Rondon hitting the woodwork and Hugo Lloris making instinctive saves to keep Spurs ahead.
Newcastle created enough chances to put them level but in the end, Pochetino's men did the job and rightly so.
