The corpse of late Jesse Onaniba, a member of a vigilance group who was killed on July 24, 2018, during an attack on Okoya Street, in the Ajegunle area of Lagos State, has been released to his family by the police.

Jesse’s cousin, Kenneth Onaniba, told our correspondent on Tuesday that the Lagos State Police Command gave the family the documents to secure Jesse’s remains from the morgue of the Mainland Hospital, Yaba, on August 12, 2018.

He added that the corpse was moved to the Umu-Okpara area of Imo State and buried on Sunday.

PUNCH Metro had reported that Jesse was murdered by some hoodlums, identified as Cemetery Boys, who disguised as robbers to attack Okoya Street.

Residents had said the vigilance group to which Jesse belonged had foiled an attack by Cemetery Boys, adding that the fight during which Jesse died was a reprisal by the gang.

But the police said the attack was a supremacy clash between Cemetery Boys and Mosalasi Boys in Ajegunle.

It was also reported that the deceased’s family, aside from demanding justice for Jesse, accused the police of detaining his corpse.

Kennet said the family got the release paper on Friday, August 10.

The 35-year-old pastor said, “The State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department of the Lagos State Police Command gave us a release paper which we took to the Mainland Hospital’s mortuary in Yaba.

“Jesse’s death is a big loss to us; but we are happy that his corpse has been released for burial. We buried him in his father’s compound in Umu-Okpara, Imo State.

“We got the paper on Friday, settled matters at the hospital on Saturday and the corpse was released to us around 8am on Sunday. From the hospital, we took his remains to Umu-Okpara, Imo State, and buried him in his father’s compound.”

Jesse’ father, Anthony Onaniba, said he and his wife had yet to recover from the shock of the death.

The 65-year-old farmer said, “I am not feeling fine because my 28-year-old son was killed unjustly. Up till now, my wife and I are still crying. God knows those involved in the death of my son, and I leave everything to God.”

The Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Chike Oti, said the police released the corpse to the family on compassionate grounds.

He said, “We have made a number of arrests in connection with the fight between Mosalasi Boys and Cemetery Boys in Ajegunle, as well as the murder. The suspects are at the homicide section of the SCIID.

“However, the command on compassionate grounds released the corpse of Jesse to his family upon presentation of a sworn affidavit from a court requesting the release of the corpse for burial.”
