CHAPTER TWO
11:00 A.M, Monday morning. The National assembly, in a joint session between members of the House of Representatives and Senate resumed work after a 30 day recess. Members of the two chambers were seated to commence work on the budget the presidency had sent six months earlier for approval which had been delayed and had consequently crippled the nation’s economy. The senate president who was represented by his deputy as a result of his medical trip to London wanted a speedy approval of the budget to make the nation’s economy bounce back to her feet. The deputy senate president, Hon.Chukudi Ibe asked the house for observations, contributions and concerns about the budget. Hundreds of hands rose in the air for indication to speak. Hon. Chukudi looked at the multitudes, giving the floor to Hon. Olawale Abayomi who stood and spoke.
‘Distinguished colleagues, Mr. President, and every other person here-sitted, I’m thankful for the privilege given to me to speak on the issue at hand. It will be recalled that in the speech of the president of our dear country, he said and I quote: ‘My administration will show zero tolerance for corruption'. Now, I’d like everyone to please turn to page 28 of the document.’ He waited for some few minutes before he continued. ‘A sum total of 5.7 billion naira is budgeted for kitchen materials and computers in the State house. Last year, the sum of 8 billion naira was similarly budgeted for kitchen materials and computers for the state house. My question is: what about the ones that were bought last year because I can remember very vividly that the said amount was released for the purchase of the said items. Does it mean that the ones the state house bought last year were thrown away? Mr. President, each year, the labour unions go on strike over non-payment of salaries and allowances and the labour minister come on air to say there is no money, throwing workers into abject povery and hardship, thereby boosting the level of social vices among children of workers whose plight is ignored. Mr. President, distinguished colleages, we must ensure that this budget is different from the usual business whereby strange things creep into it. Thank you.’ He said and sat down.
‘Thank you, Hon. Abayomi. It’s noted’ Hon. Chukudi intoned and gave the floor to Hon.Dike Omeyer after looking at the sea of hands.
‘Mr. President, speaker of the house of representatives, most distinguished parliamentarians. I’d like to throw a very sensitive question at the appropriation chairman before I release mind-blowing revelations. Can the chairman of appropriation, senate, explain to us how and from where two different versions of the budget proposal have emerged?’ The chairman of appropriation looked away as most eyes fell on him.
‘I have made four-hundred and seventy copies of the new version which is currently going round.’
He waited for close to ten minutes before he rode on. After he realized that they were all with him, he proceeded. ‘In the original copy, Mr. President, there is a sum total of 160 billion naira ear marked for Benin-Lagos road construction. In the other copy, that figure has been slashed to 33billion naira. Rivers-Abuja railway line which attracts 194 billion naira in the original copy has grown wings and disappeared into the air without a trace. It is no longer there. In the original copy,4 billion naira is allocated for Ondo West constituency project. That is the constituency of the chairman, appropriation committee, senate. In the new copy, the figure has risen drastically to 36 billion naira’
A murmur ran through the chamber.
‘Four billion naira is allocated to Umuahia constituency 1 in the original copy which has sky-rocketed to 34billion naira in the new copy. That is the constituency of Hon. Chukudi, the deputy senate president. The sum of three billion naira is allocated to the constituency of the chief whip, (senate). In the new version, it has climbed to 19billion naira. The majority leader’s constituency, Hon. Vincent Okpo has a project of 3billion naira in the original version which also has jerked up to 8 billion naira. Kabba Constituency 2 has the sum of 4 billion naira constituency project in the original copy which has climbed to 24billion naira. That is the constituency of the speaker of the house of reps.’
At this point, there was a cacophony of voices.
‘Mr. President, without mincing words, it is visible to the blind and audible to the deaf that something is wrong somewhere.’ There was an uproar as the revelation triggered confusion of voices which the acting president fought to calm.
‘Mr. President, obviously, both chambers have reallocated the lion share of the budget to themselves. I am pained because there is absolutely nothing to show for the previous year’s constituency allowances allocated to most of the various constituencies. I am forced to say those involved in this offense do not represent the interest of the nation. It foregrounds their lack of integrity, and honesty. On this note, Mr. President, I move a motion for their immediate removal from their exalted positions and I call for their immediate suspension from the house pending the time a committee would be constituted to investigate and report back to the house.’ He submitted and sat quietly.
His address triggered pandemonium and a free for all ensued. Consequently, two camps were formed. Hon. Isiaka, Hon. Apata and Hon. Prince Will charged toward him, pouncing and descending an avalanche of blows on him. He tumbled and dashed his jaw against his seat. Hon. Adegoroye hurried to his rescue. He reached for a long plank and swung it at the trio who had covered him. They staggered. Hon. Isiaka stood, facing Hon. Adegoroye. They confronted each other, throwing punches at each other in a quick succession. Hon. Adegoroye swung an uppercut which caught him on his chest. He tumbled in a swoon. He went after him. However, Hon.Isiaka had smashed a bottle, holding it in readiness to protect himself. Hon. Adegoroye was stabbed real bad when he attempted to attack after getting to him. He fell, screaming. Blood spewed out of him. No one went to his rescue as everyone was paired. Hon. Chukudi bled where he laid. Hon. Mrs Folakemi removed something that looked like the horn of a ram tied with a red piece of cloth and cowries from her bag. She chased after Hon.William Okugbe who took to his heels, looking back at intervals when she appeared in front of him, hitting him maliciously. He collapsed in a chair as though he was dead. Hon. Akugbo grabbed the mace and followed the chief whip of the house of senate. As he attempted to escape, it caught him on the head. His head cracked. Blood spewed out of it and drenched his cloth. He collapsed in a pool of blood. Hon. Dickson, the senate minority leader launched a blow at Hon.Afeeze who waved it away with his left hand and polished his face with a swift blow, toppling it with an upper cut. Hon.Afeeze jiggled with a right lunge at the abdomen of Hon.Olumekun who moved nimbly, bent over and grunted. Hon. Afeeze grabbed him again round the waist, throwing him on the ground. Hon. Olumekun attempted to stand and abscond when he caught him again and tripped him. He lifted him from the ground as his legs dangled in the air. He tossed him to the edge of his chair which scooted over. Hon. Animasahun who had narrowly escaped a blow from a rear end charged toward Hon. Afeeze, winging high a thick plank. Hon. Afeeze evaded it and smashed him in the stomach. He confused him with jabs on his chest and floored him with a left cross. Hon. Hazael and Hon. Ikenna paired themselves at a corner of the hollowed chamber. Hon. Ikenna swung left jabs at Hon.Haezel’s nose till he began to bleed. He polished him with a right hook. Hon.Hadad who was fighting with Hon.Nnamdi began hitting and lashing him with both hands in wild swings. Hon. Gbemisola ran past Hon.David and got knocked down by his swinging punches. He cried out in pain. The deputy senate president, Hon. Chukudi was cornered by Hon.Otunba and Hon. Oseni . Honourable Otunba conjured him, rocking backwards and charging back at him almost immediately with swift punches to his eyes. Hon. Otunba Gbenga pounced on Hon.Chijioke, giving him hard hits, each with excellent executions. He chewed more punches at his cheek. He pushed Hon. Apata who fell in a chair and wobbled. Hon. Otunba grabbed a chair and flung it at Hon.Elah Briggs. He ducked it and it clattered on the ground. Hon.Elah’s muscles rippled restlessly in his arms. He tossed off the chairman of appropriation, Hon.Wilson, who attempted to grab him. He lifted his great fist, descended it on him and the appropriation chairman ducked into his media aid. Suddenly, a metal flying in the air smashed one of the C.C.T.V cameras. Towards the exit door, several hands clawed on Hon.Ogundele Monilari .Mrs Olowokere representing Agbor constituency one hurled the broken parts of her laptop at a man charging toward her. He waved them with the green white green flag and brushed an oncoming attacker with it. It hit the window and shattered to pieces. Three Honourable members were half naked. Hon. Uzorbulu cracked a long stick on the head of Hon. Shehu who was headed for an escape route. The hollowed chamber was overturned. The intensity of the fracas overwhelmed the chamber. Objects flew freely in the air, Hon. Timilehin raised his hand to hit Hon.Okowa who narrowly ran past him. He dashed at the majority leader. He was held back by three other Honourables whose hands he brushed away in a surge of anger. He captured him at a corner and flattened him with a crackling punch. He began to stir. He bent down, lashed him some more with violent punches. It was a heated debate with thrusts and blows. A vicious activity, it was. Terror, fear, and disorder clashed, invading the chamber. After a while, it seemed as though the fracas was about to be abated when disorder protested, unseated the senate president victoriously and enthroned itself on the highest legislative seat. Hon. Kalizibe slowly drew out a plank from an end and motioned along the path of Hon. Chibuzor. He lifted his hand, almost descending it on when the minority leader grabbed his arm fearlessly and shoved it aside. He buried it under a thick rug. Hon. Otunba was circled by two other members. They lashed him and he grunted aloud. They registered heavy punches in his chest. He fell, rolled over and landed in a puddle. He attempted to get up slowly but his head was hanging. They launched a barrage of punches at him again. At an extreme end, Hon.Sherriff ducked and parried the blows thrown at him. Senator Egbunu and Senator Ovie confronted each other. Ovie bobbed and weaved. He polished Hon.Egbunu with a succession of bobs. Suddenly, Hon.Egbunu gave him a short quick down-and-up motion hit. In return, Hon. Ovie clustered his face with unexpected hits. He sank to the ground in deep pains, sobbing. He kept striking him with quick light blows. Hon. Oguntimehin released a whirlwind of combinations of targeted hits, calculated blows, vicious crosses and crackling nods on Hon. Ovie who thought he’d conquered. His head lowered. Hon. Ovie and Hon. Wokocha scuffled together. The fracas persisted for hours. It was a blood bath. Everything was in disarray. The ground was flooded and submerged with blood. Bones were broken, skins were torn, properties were destroyed, heads cracked, eyes bulged, tears rolled, skins bled, objects flew, heads rolled after fury sparkled in the legislative house. Hon. Ovie tried to shield himself. However, they had descended on him real bad. His defenses were shattered. He was rushed with heavy hits that whisked him across his seat. He was fed with punches and merciless hits. He was crushed with an avalanche of successive blows. Blood eructed out of his mouth. His neck wrenched , his teeth rattled. He tried to stand but staggered backwards. He felt woozy and light-headed. His face was beaten out of shape. It got dented and swollen beyond description. Cuts widened on his back, blood spurted from his nose. The minority leader launched a heavy blow at the chief whip after slouching toward him. His jaw aligned itself and the blow connected with it. He fell and became unconscious. Finally, the state security operatives stormed the hollowed chamber. They shot teargas into the air sporadically but it took more than thirty-five minutes before the free for all was abated. Doctors and nurses were invited into the house to administer quick treatments. Shortly after, about eighty-six parliamentarians were flown abroad.
CHAPTER THREE
Pious got hurled forward in his seat. His car began bucking and jolting. The peugeot swerved, screeching to a halt, spinning twice on its side and restraining his car from moving. Dauda with his men hurried out, armed to the teeth. The clicking, clacking and crackling sounds of their rifles escaped into the air; they pointed the rifles directly at his car.
‘Get out of the car and place your hands on your heads slowly’
Dauda yelled. Quietly, like a king checkmated on the board of chess, they obeyed.
‘Cuff them’ he commanded.
They were forced into contorting postures with their fingers crossed at the back of their heads. They searched the car thoroughly.
‘Sir’
‘Found something?’ Dauda asked.
‘A flash’
‘Bring it over’
He collected it from him and inserted it into a system. He clicked on the files and a repertoire of incriminating data popped up. Another file popped up a handful of documents – forged U.S military documents, pictures of the U.S military personnel, international numbers, affidavits, stolen credit card codes, Bank Verification Numbers (BVN) and forged court documents. Ben retrieved the phones of Pious, Fred, White and Rakim. He yelled at Fred to unlock his phone. After he did, his conversation with Emmy Chloe, Paula White, Flora Powel and Mandy Hinn appeared, revealing hundreds of thousands of pound sterling they had sent to him. Ben skimmed through. His countenance changed afterwards. He furiously hit Fred with his baton who fell grasping for air. Air choked him as he coughed amid hiccups and a renewed fear fell on him. He felt light-headed and slightly woozy. Dauda seized Pious’ car key. He ordered his men to make an assemblage of the exhibits and bundle them into the vehicle. Pious signaled him to allow him have a talk with him as he was going to enter the car.
