HERE ARE 15 CURRENT NEWS IN NIGERIA THIS WEEK
#1. The United Nations has identified generous contributions and extortion as some of the means through which the Boko Haram terrorist group is being funded.

The international body revealed this in a report from Kairat Umarov, the Chairperson of the Security Council Committee pursuant to resolutions 1267 (1999), 1989 (2011) and 2253 (2015) concerning Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (Da’esh), Al-Qaida and associated individuals, groups, undertakings, and entities read the complete story on channelstv



#2. The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has barred the 23 newly registered political parties from taking part in the September 22, 2018 governorship election in Osun State.

INEC also announced that all political parties could on Saturday begin holding party primaries in preparation for the 2019 general elections which will begin in February.

#3. The Department of State Services (DSS) on Thursday announced the appointment of Mr. P.N. Afunanya as its spokesman and Public Relations Officer.

A statement by the Public Relations department of the service said Afunanya obtained BA. English (1997), Abia State University, Uturu; MA. English (2009), University of Uyo; and MA. Peace and Strategic Studies (2011), University of Ilorin.

#4. President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday called the Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson over the death of his mother, Madam GoldCoast Dickson.

A tweet on the Presidency’s official Twitter handle said Buhari, who is currently on a 10-day vacation in London, called Dickson to condole with him over the death of his mother.

#5. Former Vice president Alhaji Abubakar Atiku has described President Muhammadu Buhari’s government as one replete with lies.

Atiku, who spoke when he visited the PDP secretariat Enugu on Thursday, said the current government was a government of liars because they promised three million jobs per annum but Nigeria has been losing three million jobs every year.

#6. The Federal Government, in collaboration with state governments, have moved to decentralize operations of the Nigeria Police for effective performance and appreciable improvement of policing and security in the country.

According to a press statement signed by the Senior Special Assistant to the Acting President on Media and Publicity, Mr Laolu Akande, and made available to newsmen, the decision was part of the highlights of the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting held on Thursday.

#7. The Gombe State Minority Leader, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Haruna has decamped from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Haruna announced his defection during Thursday’s plenary presided over by the Speaker, Alhaji Nasiru Abubakar Nono.

#8. President Muhammadu Buhari’s Personal Assistant on New Media, Bashir Ahmad on Thursday declared that the prices of foodstuff have reduced.

Ahmad claimed that a bag of Maize which was sold for N15, 000 was now selling for between N12,000 to N15,000.

#9. Popular American soul singer, Aretha Franklin has been reported dead.

The 76-year-old legendary singer was diagnosed with cancer in 2010 and announced last year she was retiring from music pass away on Thursday.

#10. Nigeria’s Under-20 Women team has been eliminated from the ongoing Women’s World Cup in France.

The Spanish team beat the falconets 2-1 to advance to the semi-final stage of the competition.

#11. Governors under the auspices of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum have declared that they were not elected to only pay salaries of civil servants. Chairman of the NGF and Zamfara State governor, Abdulaziz Yari, said they were voted to also provide good roads, electricity, education and other necessary amenities for the people.

#12. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has extended the deadline for the Continuous Voter Registration by two weeks.

This was announced on Tuesday in a statement by National Commissioner and Member, Voter Education and Publicity Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna. According to him, INEC had initially fixed August 17 to end the CVR in order to have enough time to make all necessary preparations before 2019 but after several appeals by Nigerians, the extension was considered.

#13. The acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, has assured the Federal Bureau of Intelligence (FBI) that the anti-graft agency will intensify its fight against cyber crimes in the country.

Magu on Thursday said that the collaboration between the FBI and EFCC has recorded much success. He added that part of the joint operation with the FBI, a recent exercise codenamed “Operation Wire Wire” has led to the arrest of over 32 suspected cybercriminals by the anti-graft agency.

#14. Falz threatens to sue NBC over ban on ‘This is Nigeria. Multiple award-winning music artiste, Folarin Falana, better known as Falz, has threatened to sue the National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, over the ban of his hit song: ‘This is Nigeria’

#15. Senator Dino Melaye is confident that nobody can impeach the Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki.

The lawmaker who represents Kogi West district said this during his appearance onChannels Television’s flagship political programme, Sunday Politics.
