Bayern Munich President Uli Hoeness has slammed Mesut Ozil saying he did not deserve to be at the World Cup and it is a "miracle" he is Arsenal's captain.

Ozil was the centre of criticism in Germany after his performances at the 2018 World Cup as the defending Champion crashed out.

He was also criticised for a photo he took with Turkey President Erdogan alongside Ikay Gundogan before the World Cup and some fans in Germany believed it was a political error.

Ozil finally retired from international football after the tournament in Russia and claimed he had suffered "racism" because of his Turkish roots.

And Bayern President Hoeness believes the whole mess could have been avoided if Ozil had not featured at the World Cup.

“We would have spared the whole theatre,” Hoeness told Sky Sport Germany.

“Ozil should have been forced to make a statement. But leaving that without explanation was probably the biggest mistake ever.”

Hoeness was also far from kind when asked about Ozil as a player.

"I've been watching the player for a long time and he's a well-marketed product whose image is a lot better than he is, which is the only big blame for me,” Hoeness said.

“Had (Germany manager Joachim) Low gone to Arsenal more often in London and looked at him (Ozil) properly, he probably would not have taken him for sporting reasons.

“And then we would have been spared the whole theatre.

“It is a miracle that he is now captain at Arsenal.”

New Arsenal Manager Unai Emery has not yet settled on a team captain but Ozil wore the armband for a time in pre-season.
