The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned of the dire consequence that will befall academic progress in Nigeria if authorities continue to starve the nations’ universities of funds.

The Zonal Co-ordinator, ASUU Owerri Zone, Uzo Unyebinama, who stated this while addressing members of the union in Awka, Anambra State, yesterday, blamed the situation termed, ‘abysmal condition of universities in Nigeria,’ largely on the absence of funding by the proprietors/management of universities.

In another development, Osun and Oyo state governments have been accused by ASUU of unparalleled insensitivity over the crisis rocking the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH).

The union said the inability of both state governments to fund LAUTECH and pay the emoluments of members of staff of the university jointly owned by them is indicative of gross incompetence.

Onyebinama, who spoke at a press conference held at the University of Port Harcourt yesterday, said the union would resist any attempt by the two state governments to deliberately shift the burden of funding of LAUTECH to indigent students through outrageous regime of tuition fees. He said the attempt to impose another charges as means to shore of revenue for the university would be seen as a calculated attempt to deny poor access to university education.

“LAUTECH has continued to have problems of very poor funding since 2013 due to failure by owner-state governments of Oyo and Osun to take over responsibility of funding the university. They owed members of staff 10 months salaries arrears, 2013 – 2017 promotion arrears and 2009-2017 Earned Academic Allowance (EAA).

“There is no evidence of interest development at LAUTECH since inception of the present Oyo/Osun governments. In view of this ugly situation, members of staff, students, as well as their parents and sponsors, have been subjected to untold hardship,” he lamented.

I suggest the state government should close down the university indefinitely if they can't fund it instead of punishing the students with strikes and all that.

NIGERIA'S MILITARY IMPOSED FEDERALISM THAT PUT ALL THE WEALTH OF THE COUNTRY UNDER THE CENTRAL GOVERNMENT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL THIS PROBLEMS IN NIGERIA TODAY.

MOST STATES THAT HAVE RESOURCES E.G SOLID MINERAL HAVE BEEN MADE TO LOOK UP TO FEDERAL POWERS IN ABUJA FOR STIPEND AT THE EXPENSE OF THEIR GOD GIVEN RESOURCES.

This is coming at the expense of exploitation of oil producing community in Nigeria.

COME TO THE FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF PETROLEUM RESOURCES UGBOMRO, EFFURUN IN DELTA STATE AND SEE A GLORIFIED COLLEGE CALLED FEDERAL UNIVERSITY.

COME TO THE MARITIME UNIVERSITY OKERENKOKO, IN GBARAMATU KINGDOM IN DELTA STATE, ANOTHER GLORIED COLLEGE.

This is the Niger Delta region that the crude oil money that Nigeria's political leader are mismanaging and looting is coming from.

Also, their money is being used by the federal powers in Abuja to feather the nest of other states.

Let Nigeria go back to the post independence constitution of the 1960 s where we had regional government and each region was independent of one another.

We can not continue on this military jamboree.

There must be justice, equity and fairness in Nigeria.

Let all this so called poor states in Nigeria look inward to develop their own God given resources.

The federal government must devolve power with sufficient decentralization.

TOO MUCH POWER AT THE CENTRE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE STAGNANCY IN NIGERIA AS STATES LOOK TOWARDS ABUJA FOR THEIR SURVIVAL.

Take the bailout that was release by the federal government. Most state governor abused the bailout. But if they were to work hard to get that kind of money they would not have dream of abusing it as their own people will hold them to account for the money.

I WOULD LIKE TO ADVISE POLITICAL LEADERS IN NORTHERN NIGERIA TO AGREE TO THE ONGOING CALL FOR THE RESTRUCTURING OF NIGERIA.

There is no two way about. Even the crude oil that the northern leadership is dying over is becoming lesser and lesser in value as europe, asia and the americans are not too keen about buying the crude.

THE WAY FORWARD IS TO REVITALIZED AGRICULTURE IN NIGERIA. This is to enable us feed our people, create agro allied industries to create jobs and also export food products overseas for foreign exchange.

It's unfortunate that our leaders don't care about the public schools that gave so much to them. That is why they never send their own children to such schools. Yet some less thinking folks blame ASUU. Look at LAUTECH's case... mtcheww
