Libya: Tripoli Again Theater Of Violent Clashes Between Rival Militias by Sipcyp(m): 10:48pm On Aug 30, 2018
Since the beginning of the week, fighting has rival militias near the Libyan capital. At least 27 dead and more than 100 wounded, many of them civilians, according to the Ministry of Health.

After a few months of lull, the Libyan capital is again in the grip of violent clashes. Local rescuers say several families are still stranded in the fighting zone south of the capital.

These clashes set rival militias in search of power and enrichment by seizing state property. They also illustrate the weakness of the national unity government - supported by the international community - which does not control its militias. It is these groups that are the masters of the game in western Libya. They manage the everyday lives of citizens instead of the government.

Some Libyan observers even consider that Fayez al-Sarraj, the head of the Tripoli government, is a doll in the hands of the militias. They accuse foreign forces of wanting to prolong the transition period for their interest.
