The top 3 for FIFA's 'The Best' awards have been revealed
by Rob Hoskin
Last week’s UEFA award ceremony caused quite a stir, didn’t it?
The accolades are fairly low-key when compared to the Ballon d’Or and FIFA ‘The Best’ awards.
But that doesn’t mean players aren’t desperate to get their hands on the prizes.
Well, Cristiano Ronaldo was pretty desperate, it seems.
The Portuguese superstar was reportedly upset that Luka Modric was to be awarded the main prize and simply refused to turn up.
That’s despite Ronaldo landing the Forward of the Year award on the night - an accolade he didn’t have the chance to collect in person.
But there’s an even more prestigious award ceremony taking place in three weeks’ time - FIFA’s The Best.
The awards, voted for by players, coaches journalists and fans, will be held in London on September 24 and Ronaldo will be hoping to keep hold of the trophy he won last year.
And he has a chance.
Sport have revealed the top three and the Juventus star will be on the podium.
Alongside him will be Modric and Antoine Griezmann.
That’s right, Lionel Messi has not made the top three.
That is rather astonishing.
Messi helped Barcelona win La Liga and the Copa del Rey last season, winning the Pichichi and the European Golden Shoe in the meantime.
Messi’s Argentina may have crashed out of the World Cup at the last-16 stage but Ronaldo’s Portugal also exited on the very same day.
And when you consider Messi hasn’t even been outside the top-two in the Ballon d’Or voting since 2008, it really is remarkable that he won’t be on the podium at the FIFA awards.
We've got a feeling Cristiano will be turning up to this award night...
