Social media is an interactive computer mediated technologies that facilitate the creation and sharing of information, ideas, career interest and other forms of expression. As the day goes by, it grows rapidly and is becoming a vital part of our everyday life. In some climes, it’s registered as one of the best things to have happened to this generation yet its effects are far reaching especially to students.

Increases dependency on the media
Students increasingly begin to depend heavily on information available on the social media platform specifically in order to get answers. This in turn reduces their learning and research capabilities.

Exposure to erotic scenes
Also, social media exposes students to erotic scenes like pornographically oriented pictures and videos which in turn affects the psychological buildup of such student and eventually leads to poor result as regard their academic.

Stiff Addiction to the Internet
In addition, exposing students to social media results in addiction as students feel so fixed on their gadgets and it becomes more or less a distraction to them. This results in them wasting judicious time on social platforms without any gain from it.

However, the benefits of social media cannot be over emphasized as it helps students gain wider knowledge and this helps students enhance their academic performance. Most especially, in this era of technology where lectures are given online and students can stay at the comfort of their rooms to receive lectures. Also it provides student accessibility to material through their gadgets.
