Elia, iam surprise to hear this. which part of Nigeria are you? if you are in lagos, i guess you have not been diligent enough to look for law firms. there are many of them to employ you. If i may ask what was your grade in school. if you made a 2-1 then there is no reason why you should not have gotten a place by now this is because most law firms, esspecially those on the island that pay very well require 2-1. But even at that so many of them take 2-2 as well. send your cvs to these firms
1 Banwo&Ighodalo- 168 awolowo Road Ikoyi lagos
2Aluko&Oyebode-35 molonu street Obalande lagos
3Ikeyi&Arifayan-8th floor, 21 boyle street onikan lagos
4Olaniwun &Ajayi-uba house
5.Udo udoma&bello osagie- st nicholas house, catholic mission str. lagos
6.paul usoro &co union bank house 9 oyin jolayemi str. vi, lagos
7Templers-13/15 AJ Marinho drive vi, Lagos
8.Ealex- marble house besides church of assumption falomo

and so many of them. By the time you have sent in your cv to all these law firms, bet me you will be called before you know it. All the best.

Onyema, thanks a lot. Iwill definitely submit my cv in some of the named firms. Maybe i will be lucky this time. As for the grade, i made a second class lower in the University and a pass in Law School. The major problem( for them and definitely not me )is that i am married. I have tried so many firms. I will prefer a law firm located in Ikeja that is if you know any one. Thanks for your concern. You can email me on eliaphilip2003@yahoo.com.Thanks in anticipation.
Re: Law Chambers Pls Recruite by toppiyano(f): 9:04pm On Apr 03, 2007

Re: Law Chambers Pls Recruite by cheekymale(m): 6:57pm On Apr 05, 2007
Its not as easy as Onyeama makes it seem.

I just got a job at a top firm (apparently, he doesn't agree as its not on his list), and i know for a fact that getting into one of those firms isnt beans.

You definately won't get in by just taking your cv around ( i tried it, went to 16 firms and got only one call back). What you really need is a referral, also know as 'long leg'. Get someone who knows you and has some kind of relationship with the firm, the principal, a partner or a member of staff to introduce you to the firm and recommend you for employment. That's what seems to work these days.

Thats not how i got my job, by the way. I guess i just got lucky. Whatever you do, keep at it and don't give up, because that is the only time you truly fail.

E go beta!

Good luck!

Re: Law Chambers Pls Recruite by Elia(f): 7:14pm On Apr 05, 2007
Yeah, e go better! Before i forget, congrats. But how do law firms pay nowadays? Is it better now?
Re: Law Chambers Pls Recruite by Elia(f): 9:17pm On Apr 07, 2007
Onyeka, i have personally taken my cv to three of the law firms you recomended and their response was the same -"We are not hiring lawyers now! The chambers is full. " So what do you have to say to that? Not even a chat with me talkless of an interview. Its a shame that i spent so much time to become a lawyer only to become a stay at home mum!
Re: Law Chambers Pls Recruite by Nobody: 9:22pm On Apr 07, 2007
The stay at home mum role pays a lot these days doesnt it? grin
Just kidding but do you really blame these firms? How many lawyers can they absorb every year, i'm sure they do have a limit.

I wish you God's favour anyway.
Re: Law Chambers Pls Recruite by Seun(m): 9:29pm On Apr 07, 2007
Wow, this is an opportunity. Let's form a legal firmy that specializes in suing music and movie pirates!!
Re: Law Chambers Pls Recruite by Elia(f): 10:09pm On Apr 09, 2007
Good idea! I am in! So whats the game plan? I guess we should start from Nollywood.Or Seun should we start from Hollywood or Bollywood?
Re: Law Chambers Pls Recruite by ifezue(m): 12:46am On Apr 10, 2007
hey!!! I thoght i was the only lawyer who has got his ass stuck at home until i read from you. Though I aws called to the Nigerian Bar in November, 2006, I have traversed the whole of lagos Island looking for jobs with my 2:2 in both law school and university, all to no avail. Although there are about 8 law firms on every street in lagos, there are still a lot of unemployed lawyers.
Men, after a long and unsuccessful search, i decided to specialize further in the area of intellectual property law. I hope that will pay off in the long run, although my eyes are still on the streets

Ifezue, i like your guts o!.So you mean you are still on this Law thing? I would have prefered you tried out an MBA or better still professional bodies like National Institute of Chartered Secretaries. I think that will equip you better.
Re: Law Chambers Pls Recruite by Aproko(f): 2:50pm On Apr 11, 2007
am currently in a small law firm(sole proprietorship) and i got in by reference!!!that was after i submitted my cv to all the major ones which am sure are shredded by now.now adays you need to know someone who knows someone, apart from God, that is your major hope and even that doesnt work all the time. there are too many lawyers and dont forget lawyers are stingy esp the sole proprietors, they use you and expect you to be grateful!!!being married should be a thing of joy and spell stability, but guess what?lawyers dont want the excuse of my kids are sick, have to cook for my husband, sorry i cant come to work on sat cos my in-laws are comming around e.t.c they seem to forget that they have wives too, or for the females they were once in this situation. i think you should keep your options open,an ICSAN is good but it may not be the messiah, God is. so just pray that what is yours doesnt pass you by.

Well for starters, Banwo & Ighodalo pays about a 100k, Olanihun Ajayi 90k plus, Templars pays over a 100k, gani Fawehinmi 35k, Aluko & Oyebode 100k, Adepetun Caxton Martins 70 k plus, however most law firms apart from the top firms pay between 25k and 50k.

Lest I forget, Aelex pays about 80k

R these supposed to be monthly pay of per annum.

Does Femi Falana have a chambers in Lagos?
Re: Law Chambers Pls Recruite by aydewale: 5:32pm On Apr 11, 2007
Hugo boi, believe me, I in one of the 1st five mentioned (not Gani) and the pay is monthly not per annum. A number of law firms pay quite well now.

when u talk about per annum u are talking about 840k to about 1.3 million. My annual take home, is in that range.

As for falani, he runs a law firm and has his wife as partner. it used to be at Ikeja GRA but i don't know the present location. It may still be there. I can't remember the exact name of the street but its around the Railway crossing.

Stay Blessed and all the best.
Re: Law Chambers Pls Recruite by Elia(f): 8:33pm On Apr 11, 2007
Aydewale, use your connection to find me a law firm pls. It doesnt have to be the top paying ones. I need the experience first. Well, if you wish to connect me, you can reach me on eliaphilip2003@yahoo.com. Thanks in anticipation.
Re: Law Chambers Pls Recruite by cheekymale(m): 12:41pm On Apr 12, 2007
Damn!

Reading all your posts makes me realize how lucky i am! My gross pay is about N1.2m a year, and i'm a first year junior associate. I won't mention the name of the firm, only that no one has mentioned it in any of their posts (i wonder why!).

Like i said earlier on, a referral is the best way to get in. I applied to most of the big firms you've all mentioned and didnt get called back. Hell, one of my friends at Olaniwun Ajayi (i applied there like 3times) told me that that the routinely have to chuck out stacks of unread cvs (into the trash), no doubt, mine was one of them!

Get a referral, and keep applying!

Re: Law Chambers Pls Recruite by ifezue(m): 2:46am On Apr 19, 2007
Guess I heard som1 Say that there are too many lawyers in Nigeria. That is actually far from the truth. Nigeria since 1963 till date has produced only 73,000 lawyers, compared to U.S that has a lawyer population of 1.2 million. Their total population is just about 250 million.
The reasons for the seeming congestion of Nigerian legal system are two-fold
(1) Nigeian lawyers have not understood the imortance of partnership and specialisation to practice.

(2) The attitude of "old wigs" to the "new wigs". The truth is that wen man don waka the whole street looking for job,he may be forced to look for the next available space, whether office or kiosk and start his own. Afterall, man must wack, whether through charge and bail or otherwise.
The legal practitioners need a change of attitude!!!

Got 2.1 at law skol and university and submitted my c.v in all these so called big places and noting came forth.Think Oyema is making it sound so simple bt i think Aydewale is very right .Infact i am single, so being marrried is not a criteria 4 these firms not employing .So help me ask wot is the essence of making 2.1 afterall when all that is required is loooooooooong legs.God dey
