Are you building in and around Abuja? Let's discuss woods by ambrosedmax(op):
Wood and planks has been an important construction material since humans began building shelters, houses and boats. Nearly all boats and Houses were made out of wood until the late 19th century, and wood remains in common use today in building construction, In buildings made of other materials, wood will still be found as a supporting material, especially in roof construction, in interior doors and their frames, Wood(planks) is also commonly used as shuttering material to form the mold into which concrete is poured during reinforced concrete construction, examples are decking of a house, stairs, parapet and floors.

It is common to classify wood as either softwood or hardwood. The wood from Araba, arcwella (etc) called softwood, and the wood from redwoods (usually broad-leaved trees, (e.g. mereke) is called hardwood. These names are a bit misleading, as hardwoods are not necessarily hard, and softwoods are not necessarily soft.

I will stick with types of wood used for construction works and explain their uses.

Like I said earlier, I'm starting with soft woods
Under that :

1by6
Those are planks which are also sawn differently before sliced into sizes..
Planks are either sawn by a sawmill or by table (handsaw)
Sawmill planks are more durable and accurate when it's being used for concrete works(its major purpose), an advantage of sawmill is that they can be use over 3times when you have heavy constructions in your sites, unlike handsaw which will not be able to serve beyond its first use. It's basically use and throw away kind of material.

Under soft woods
We have
2 by 4
2 by 3
2 by 2
2by4 (soft wood) majority use them for running planks for decking.
2by3 (soft wood) are being used for running polline for your roofing work, but note that it won't be the just soft wood, but a quality soft wood(eg Malians) to be able to stand the test of time.
2by2 (soft wood) mostly used for noggin (same quality soft woods)
Please note that the uses of the above mentioned (2by2, 2by3) can still be hard woods. It depends on individual choices and the roofers.
