[b]This topic was born out of the recent event in Abuja in Mpape and Jabi area of the Federal Capital Territory. It is worthy to mention that Nigeria does not fall within the Earthquake or Major landslide events areas. It is also important to know that we should be prepared for minor or slight earthquake as the case may be in the country as this is not the very first time we are experiencing this and considering the level of mining and quarrying activities on the rise in the country.
Earth Tremor has occurred over time in the country starting in Warri. Seismic events had been recorded instrumentally and also historically from 1933 to 2011 in Nigeria. The first widely reported occurrence of an Earth tremor in Nigeria was in 1933. Other events were reported in 1939, 1964, 1984, 1990, 1994, 1997, 2000 and 2006. The intensities of these events ranged from III to VI based on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale. Of these events, only the 1984, 1990, 1994 and 2000 events were instrumentally recorded.
These pockets of activities were felt in different parts of the country with the southwest region recording the highest number of events.
Tectonically, two causes are identified movement of molten magma within the cracks and fissures of the earth and excessive spontaneous mining or quarrying activities as the case may be.
It is advised that our professional bodies, government regulatory agencies Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society hashtag#NMGS, Council of Nigerian Mining Engineers and Geoscientists hashtag#COMEG, Nigerian Association of Engineering Geologist and The Environment hashtag#NAEGE
Nigeria Mining Cadastral should rise up to the task of monitoring and applying regulatory policies on mining and quarrying as well as the environment as it relates to control, management, hazard analysis and mapping, level of blasting and remediation plans for restoration of our land.
