The Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, has called for the harmonisation of all individual identification instruments in the country to curb the current multiplicity of personal identity of citizens.

Speaking while playing host to the management of the National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, in Ondo State; Arakunrin Akeredolu said a General Multipurpose Card can be used for all forms of identification and transactions rather than carrying various cards for related purposes.

"We can have one single card for bank transactions, I mean ATM Card; the same card can also be used as a Driver License, Voter Card and Identity Card.

"I believe the cards can be made one, rather than carrying cards for virtually everything all about", he said.

The governor who was registered after answering some questions on his biodata called on residents of Ondo State to troop out enmass to register, so as to obtain their respective National Identity Card.

According to the governor, the National Identity Card will enable them qualify to benefit from the good policies and programmes of the Federal Government.

The governor however appealed to the commission to make the registration biometric- complaint to curb deliberate multiple registrations by some individuals for criminal activities.

Earlier, the State Coordinator of the National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, Mr Akinwale Agbotoba had lauded the governor for his sterling achievements since he assumed office.

Mr Agbotoba noted that NIMC was mandated to provide secured identity for all Nigerians and legal residents through the issuance of a smart General Multi Purpose Card, GMPC.

He added that the National Identification Number, NIN, protects citizens from identity theft, therefore, being an antidote to identity theft-driven frauds.

"The NIN enhances access to credit from financial institutions and a tool for non-repudiation and security of financial transaction as well as facilitation of cashless economy.

"The NIN also facilitates one person, one identity and thereby enhances participation in political process, serving as important tool for the fight against corruption and terrorism," he said.

He assured that the NIMC will continue to enlighten members of the public on the need to enrol in NIN especially now that it has commenced registration of minors.

The NIMC State Coordinator used the opportunity of the visit to solicit the assistance of the State Government at achieving the mandate of the commission in the state.

The Deputy Governor, Hon. Agboola Ajayi; Secretary to the State Governor, Hon Ifedayo Abegunde; Chief of Staff, Chief Olugbenga Ale and the Honourable Commissioner for Information, Mr Yemi Olowolabi joined the governor to receive the Coordinator and his management staff.

even USA did not make one multipurpose card for it's citizens


Two Organizations can be merged to produce the same stuff but i doubt they'll let that work

For instance Can we merge national ID and Voter's card together ? if you have National ID , you should be eligible to vote ( if they merge it)


at least i think both requires being 18 before you can register


If the government eventually wants to start paying social benefits / security to residents of this country , the card could be used to recieve deposits from government as well ,


But ATM card ? Banks are private entities, i doubt they'd want to have their business joined or controlled by the government
