How Jonathan Caused PDP’S Downfall

Dr Goodluck Jonathan may be popular among his people, the international community and his party the Peoples Democratic Party after willingly accepting defeat in the 2015 Presidential elections to General Muhammadu Buhari but his role in his own defeat is something he too has admitted to shortly after he was removed through the ballot box.

Nigeria had moved passed the death of it’s President Alhaji Musa Yaradua who died after a protracted ailment and Dr Goodluck Jonathan has assumed constitutional rights as President being the next in line on May 5 2010. It was expected that Jonathan would complete the first tenure of his late boss, step aside for a Northerner to fulfill the party criteria for Presidency which was eight years for the North and eight years for the South. However given the circumstances that Jonathan was in many felt it was an opportunity the South- South could not afford to miss out on as such chance only occurs once in a hundred years. The South- South leaders also felt that their contributions to the nation through oil revenues should be rewarded now.



The Northern Oligarchy had demanded their own kinsman succeeded Late Yaradua but also Jonathan’s kinsmen had infused some audacity into him to take advantage of his proximity to power by declaring his interest. The sheepish Jonathan had initially said no to the suggestion as he felt it was against the party’s wish to let the zoning formula change to the detriment of their general interest . However with adequate pressure from some clergymen close to the Dr Jonathan, he had confidently declared his stance to contest for the office of the President. While he received great support even from his party men from the North. A few people ( the likes of General Ibrahim Babangida, Aliyu Gusau, Atiku Abubakar ) were not ready to step aside for Jonathan without a fight . But seeing that Jonathan had gotten favours from alot of his party members including the former President Olusegun Obasanjo, it was now clear that whoever tried contesting against Jonathan was on his own. Alhaji Atiku Abubakar dared to in the Primaries but he was beaten black and blue as Jonathan got the nod to be his party’
